Historical Description

At Sutton, about a mile from Cheam, near the turnpike-gate, is a very large chalk-pit, which produces a variety of extraneous fossils. According to Doomsday Book, there were once two churches in this parish; there is at present only one, a small structure, consisting of a nave and a chancel. On the outside of a north window of the nave is the following mutilated inscription, cut in stone:

PRI. PUR WILL EM FOUL. ALICIE . MAT: ILLI. S.

" Pray for the soul of William Foul and Alice his mother."

In the church are several handsome monuments, and in the church-yard a sarcophagus of white marble, almost overgrown with ivy, to the memory of Cecil, daughter and heiress of Charles Mathews, Esq. of Castle Menyche, in Glamorganshire, wife of Charles Talbot, Esq. barrister-at-law, (afterwards lord high chancellor of England. ) She died at this place, in the 28th year of her age, in the year 1720; at the south-east corner of the church-yard is a large mausoleum, built in the year 1777, by James Gibson, Esq. of London, for the interment of his family.

The mutton grazed upon the extensive downs in this parish is noted for its small size and fine flavour.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SUTTON is a parish, with a junction station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway to Dorking and on the lines of this company to Epsom Downs and West Croydon, and is 11 miles from London (Victoria) by railway and 12 south by road from the Royal Exchange: it is a polling place for the Mid division of the county, in the petty sessional division, union and county court district of Epsom, Wallington hundred, under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan police, and in Beddington rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The old part of the village forms one street on the old coach road to Reigate and Brighton, and is pleasantly situated on the verge of the downs. The population has very much increased within the last few years: in the north-east part of the parish a modern town has sprung up, and on the Brighton road, for nearly a mile and on the roads leading therefrom, a great number of villa residences have been built. Sutton was constituted a Local Government district, December 20, 1882, and is governed by a Local Board of 12 members. The church of St. Nicholas, rebuilt in 1864 from designs by Mr. Edwin Nash, at a cost of about £7,000, is an edifice of flint with stone dressings, in the Gothic style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with spire containing a clock and 2 bells: there are five stained windows: the nave and chancel are divided by a screen of iron work, painted and gilt, between columns of Cornish marble: the church contains some fine monuments, including memorials to Isaac Littlebury, translator of Herodotus, who died in 1710, to William, first Earl Talbot, died April 27, 1782, and to other members of the Talbot family: there is also a monument to Dorothy (Mason), died 1670. wife of Sir William Brownlowe of Belton, Lincolnshire; and a tablet to Thomas Newte, topographer: at the west end of the churchyard is & large tomb of Portland stone to James Gibson and others of that family, by whom legacies were bequeathed to the parish in 1773, upon, condition that the tomb is opened annually on the 12th of August: there are 650 sittings, all nominally free, but at present, from old custom, a considerable number are appropriated. The register dates from the year 1636. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £478, with house and 35 acres of glebe, in the gift of Hertford College, Oxford, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Herbert William Turner M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford. Christ church, Brighton road, is a spacious and handsome structure of brick with Bath stone dressings, in the Early English style, and consists at present of chancel, nave and aisles, to which a tower and chapel will shortly be added: there are 600 sittings. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £400, derived from offertory and pew rents, in the gift of the rector of Sutton, and held since 1888 by the Rev. James Randolph Courtenay Gale M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. St. Barnabas, Sutton New Town, is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1884 from the civil parishes of Sutton and Carshalton and the ecclesiastical parish of Benhilton: the church, situated in Benhill road, is an edifice of brick in the Decorated style, consisting at present only of chancel and nave: there are about 500 sittings, of which some 150 are appropriated. The register dates from the year 1884. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £184, in the gift of the Bishop of Rochester, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Charles John Boden M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge.
