Historical Description
Thames Ditton, close to the Thames. The village of Thames Ditton is just what we expect to find, a rustic village, small and quiet, including several very pretty cottages covered with the honeysuckle, the jessamine, and the vine, and some gentlemen’s seats in its neighbourhood scattered in different directions. Here is a short but pleasant walk through the church-yard, and across some fields to Weston Green, a truly rural and inviting spot. Returning hence by the road to Ditton, the church presents an extraordinary mixture of ecclesiastical and domestic architecture; the ancient part is constructed of flint- stone, which is overgrown with ivy. The modern additions are a wooden pinnacle by way of finish to the old tower; sundry casement or garret windows stuck into the roof, half slates and half tiles; these, with two or three parlour doors let into the walls, give the whole a most grotesque and vamped up appearance.
Of the "poetical flowers born to blush unseen, "in the rustic country church-yard of Ditton, we could not select one worth transferring to our pages. The tombstones exhibited neither taste nor poetry, scarcely even rhyme, and the roods, under which "the forefathers of the hamlet sleep," presented dreadful rows of iron spikes at the top, threatening a most woful punishment to the shortsighted and unwary traveller who should seek to repose his weary limbs on these unsuspected instruments of torture, placed only, we may suppose, eve the graves of those who were tyrants while living, and who wished to continue their posthumous attempts at cruelty, when mouldered with the dust.
Of the facilities for angling near this retired spot, we have already spoken in the Water Itinerary from London to Windsor and its vicinity.
THAMES DITTON is a parish and village, situated on the bank of the Thames, with a station on the South Western branch railway to Hampton Court, 14 ¼ miles from London by rail, 2 west from Kingston and 1 ½ south from Hampton Court, in the Mid division of the county, Elmbridge and Kingston hundreds, Kingston petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Emly, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The parish is supplied with gas by the Kingston Gas Company, and with water by the Lambeth Waterworks Company. The church of St. Nicholas, situated near the river, and formerly a chapel of ease to Kingston, was made parochial by Act of Parliament in 1769: it is a small but ancient building of stone with dressings of flint, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, south aisle, and a low western tower partly of wood, with an octagonal wooden spire rising from a pyramidal wooden roof, and containing a clock and 6 bells; the south aisle was added in 1864, from designs by Mr. Benjamin Ferrey, architect: there are seven stained windows: the font, apparently of the Early Norman period, consists of a massive basin with rude carving on its sides, and is placed on a modern pedestal: all the monuments have been strictly preserved: the brasses, which formerly were on the floor, are now placed on the walls, and include one with kneeling effigies to Robert Smythe esq. ob. 1539, and Katheryn his wife, ob. 1549; to Elizabeth, daughter of the above and her husband, ob. 1587; to John Cheke esq. of this parish, ob. 1590; and one placed in 1582 by his youngest daughter, Juliana, to John Polshed esq. ob. 1549: there is also a recessed monument with kneeling figures in brass, to Erasmus Forde, treasurer to Edward VI. ob. 1553, his wife and 17 children; there are other brasses to William Notte, ob. 1576, and his wife, ob. 1587, with 19 children; to Cuthbert Blakeden and John Boothe; and Juliana, wife of both, ob. 1586, and a modern brass to Charles J. Corbett esq. of Imber Court, d. 1882: the church also contains marble tablets to Robert Sheppard and Dorothy, his wife, dated 1674; a mural tablet with medallion portrait to Vice-Admiral Rowley Lambert C.B. d. July, 1880, erected by his brother officers; a memorial to Admiral Lambert, 1836, and a monument with bust to Col. Sidney Godolphin M.P. governor of the Scilly Islands, d. 1732: there are 300 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of King’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1860 by the Rev. Edward Henry Rogers M.A. late fellow of that college. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1804 and restored in 1887, with 120 sittings. Charities, producing £60 yearly, are distributed in bread and clothing. Here are almshouses for 12 persons, six of which were founded in the year 1720, by Henry Bridges esq. of Imber Court, for six married couples, each of whom receives 25s. quarterly. Thames Ditton Village Hall was erected in 1887 by Hannibal Speer esq. lord of the manor, for the parishioners of Thames Ditton. A handsome drinking fountain was presented by Mr. Speer in 1879. On the south bank of the Thames, opposite Hampton Court Park, in a secluded and delightful nook of the river, is the Swan inn, which is much frequented by anglers. Hannibal Speer esq. is lord of the manors of Ditton and Weston, the Earl of Lovelace being lord of Claygate manor. The chief landowners are the Earl of Lovelace, Hannibal Speer esq. and the Rev. George Banks. The soil is light loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are garden produce and grass.
