Historical Description

THORPE is a village and parish, beautifully situated at the foot of St. Anne’s hill, near the bank of the Thames, 2 miles north-west from Chertsey, 20 from London and 1 ¾ miles south from Egham station on the London and South Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Godley hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division and county court district, Windsor union, rural deanery of Emly, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. Several streams, tributaries to the Thames, flow through the parish and turn two mills. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint and chalk in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, transept and a western tower of brick, containing a clock and 3 bells: most of the windows are stained: there are sedilla, three piscinae and a credence table, some brasses and several tablets: the church was thoroughly repaired in 1848, and has 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £57, net income £236, with residence and 41 acres of glebe, in the gift of Rev.-Davey, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Robert Marshall Martin M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford: value of impropriation £115, with 55 acres of land. A charity of £30 12s. yearly, left by Henry Smith esq. of Wandsworth and alderman of London, who died Jan. 30, 1628, is for fuel, and Reddington's charity of £4 6s. 8d. for bread. Travers’ gift, producing £6 yearly, is for apprenticing. The principal residences are Thorpe Lee House, the residence of John C. Blackett esq.; Thorpe House, the seat of William Charles Scott esq. JP,; Eastly End, the property of Henry Ritchie esq.; and Thorpe Place, which stands in a beautifully timbered park, and is the residence of Henry Currie Leigh-Bennett esq. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is loam and gravel; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,563 acres; rateable value, £4,467; the population in 1881 was 610.
