Historical Description

THURSLEY is a parish and village, situated on the Hampshire border, 36 miles from London, 5 south-west from Godalming and 3 ½ west from Witley station on the London and South Western railway, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Godalming, county court district and petty sessional division of Guildford and Godalming, Hambledon union, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The town of Haslemere extends into this parish. The church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, aisles, south porch and a central wooden tower with spire, containing 3 bells; the porch was built in 1884 and the north aisle in 1885: the font and part of the church are Norman: there are sittings for 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1613. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £77, net income £72, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. John Brownlow Chandler M.A. vicar of Witley, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Francis Harcourt Gooch B.A. of Merton College, Oxford. The vicarage house was built in 1870. There is a Congregational chapel at Bowlhead green. There is a home here for the reception of poor children in the summer, in connection with the Ragged School Union. The charities amount to £27 14s. 6d. yearly and are distributed in bread and money. Robert Wm. Webb esq. J.P. of Milford House, Godalming, is lord of the manor. The Earl of Derby K.G. Captain Rushbrook, Yalden H. Knowles esq. W. H. Stone esq. Lea Park, Godalming, and Mrs. Gooch are the chief landowners. The soil is light. The chief crops are wheat, barley, with some land in pasture. The area is 4,353 acres, 2,784 of which are cultivated and 1,574 are heath; rateable value, £5,166; the population in 1881 was 1,020.

National School (mixed), with master’s residence, built in 1848 & enlarged in 1854, for 160 children; average attendance, 84.
