Historical Description
WANBOROUGH is a small parish, situated on the north side of the hill, called the Hog’s Back, on the top of which is the road from Guildford to Farnham, 3 miles west from Guildford, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Woking, petty sessional division and union of Guildford, county court district of Guildford and Godalming, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Bartholomew, originally an appendage to the Abbey of Waverley, and for more than two centuries in disuse, is a small and plain ivy-covered building, exhibiting some features of the Early English period, consisting of nave only, with a small turret on the western gable containing one bell: it was restored by the late rector of Puttenham and the present vicar, who has inserted a stained east window and two others, as memorials to members of his family: there are 87 sittings, 75 being free. The register dates from the year 1879. The living is a vicarage, formed in 1879, gross yearly value £ 107, in the gift of George McKibben esq of Rainsford Park, and held since 1861 by the Rev. George Robert Comyn Chilton M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, who resides at Littleton. Wanborough Manor House is the seat of Sir Algernon Edward West K C.B., J.P. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor, George McKibben esq. is the chief landowner. The soil in the high lands is chalk; subsoil, clay; and in the low lands, heavy stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,560 acres; rateable value, £2,010: the population in 1881 was 286.
