Historical Description
WARLINGHAM is a parish and village, 4 ½ miles south-east from Croydon and 5 north from Godstone, in the North Eastern division of the county, Tandridge hundred, Godstone petty sessional division and union, Croydon county court district, Godstone rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese, and has a station on the Caterham branch of the South Eastern railway, 1 ½ miles south-west from the village in Caterham valley, and another 1 mile west at Upper Warlingham, on the Croydon, Oxted and East Grinstead joint railway (London, Brighton and South Coast and South Eastern). The church of All Saints is a small structure of flint and rubble, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a turret with short spire containing one bell: there is a stained window recording the tradition that this was the first church in which the revised prayer book of Edward VI. was read: there is also a fresco of St. Christopher on the north wall, in a good stats of preservation: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1675. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Chelsham attached, gross yearly income £471, with glebe house, in the gift of D. Arkwright esq. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Frank Ransome Marriott M.A. of New College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel here. Atwood’s almshouses, founded in the year 1840 by the late Atwood Dalton Wigsell, of Warlingham, are for four widows of the parishes of Warlingham, Chelsham and Sanderstead, each of whom receives 1s. 6d. weekly; and £3 11s. from a charity, left in the year 1832 by the late Henry Smith, of Warlingham, is for bread. The trustees of the late Atwood Dalton Wigsell are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the Earl of Cottenham, Sir William R. Clayton bart. of Marden Park, Godstone, and the trustees of the late Ernald Smith esq. The soil is clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and peas. The area is 1,702 acres; rateable value, £4,530; the population in 1881 was 1,147.
Whyteleafe is a detached portion of the parish, about a quarter of a mile from Warlingham station and adjoining Upper Warlingham station and 2 miles south of the parish, in Caterham valley.
A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1872; L. Ruby, Lind road, Sutton, clerk to the board; W. H. Snelgrove, Godstone, attendance officer.
Board School (mixed), built in 1874 & enlarged in 1885, to accommodate 180 children; average attendance, 170.
