Historical Description

The pleasant village of Weybridge, situated on the river Wey, near its union with the Thames. In this parish, is Oatlands, lately the seat of His Royal Highness the Duke of York. This noble mansion is situated in the middle of the park, which is near six miles in circumference, on the verge of the terrace, whose majesty, grandeur, and the beautiful landscape which it commands, cannot be described so as to give an adequate idea of its fine scene. The serpentine river, which you look down upon from the terrace, though artificial, appears as beautiful as if it were natural; and a stranger unacquainted with the situation would conclude, from the view of Walton-bridge, that it was the Thames. This gives an excellent effect to this beautiful and picturesque prospect. Leaving the terrace you are conducted through the enchanting walks in the pleasure-grounds: some part of them appear to have been formed for midnight contemplation and retirement. Leaving these you enter a most delightful shrubbery, which leads through a pleasant walk, and brings you to a most romantic grotto, built by his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, consisting of two superb rooms and a winding passage, in which is a very neat bath, about six feet square, paved and lined with white tiles, supplied by water from the outside issuing through rocks. Quitting this grotto, which is in a very pleasing style, you observe, on the opposite side of the park, through an avenue of trees, his royal highness’s stabling, &c. a large complete building of brick and stone, with every convenience for the purpose: such are the beauties and such the ornaments of this delightful place.

Oatlands is about six miles from Kingston, already described.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WEYBRIDGE is a parish with a station on the London and South Western railway, 19 miles from London, 8 ½ west-south-west from Kingston and 3 south-east from Chertsey, in the North Western division of the county, first division of Elmbridge hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Emly, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The Basingstoke canal and river Wye here form their junction with the Thames below Shepperton lock. The village is supplied with gas by the Walton-on-Thames and Weybridge Gas Co. from works at Walton, and with water by the West Surrey Water Co. A system of electric lighting has been inaugurated during the present year (1890) and is being worked by the Laing, Wharton and Down Construction Syndicate (of 82 New Bond street, London), under contract with the Weybridge parochial authorities, and 113 street lamps are now in operation. The church of St. James, erected in 1847—8, is a building of stone, in the Pointed Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower with spire 150 feet in height and containing a clock and 8 bells, presented in 1875 by Mrs. and Miss Roberts, residents of this parish: the church has sedilia and a font of beautiful design, with lofty carved cover: most of the windows are filled with modern stained glass, and there are many ancient and curious brasses, removed from the old church, including one with skeleton effigies to three children of Sir John and Lady Trevor, viz.:-Frances, buried 1596; Dorothy, buried 1600; and Thomas, buried 1605, with the following inscription:-“Disce mori vivens, moriens ut vivere possis sic neq. mors tristis nec vita gravis erit: ’’ the other brasses are to Thomas In wood the elder, late of Weybridge, ob. 1 May, 1586; to Humphrey Dethick esq. gentleman usher to King Charles I. with the inscription:-“Mors mini lucrum;” and to John Woulde, gent. ob. 25 May, 1598, and Adrye (Street) his first wife, ob. 1 Feb. 1596: there are also some modern monuments, including one by Sir F. Chantrey to H.R.H. the Duchess of York, d. 6 Aug. 1820, whose remains are deposited in a vault in the churchyard: the chancel was rebuilt in 1890 and a stained east window and a reredos with sculptured figures added: an organ was provided in 1889 and organ chamber in 1890: there are 900 sittings, 400 being free. The register dates from the year 1625. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £165, net yearly value £356, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Walter Baptist Money M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. St. Michael and All Angels, erected in 1874 as a chapel of ease, is a structure of brick in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, and has sittings for 550 persons, half the sittings are free. The Congregational church, erected in 1865, at a cost of about £2,600, is a cruciform building of stone in the Decorated style, with a tower and spire rising to a height of 90 feet, and has sittings for 520 persons. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, was built by Mrs. Taylor, and adjoins Waverley House: beneath the chapel, in a tomb, were temporarily deposited the remains of Louis Philippe, King of the French, who died 26 Aug. 1850, and Amelie, his Queen, who died 24 March, 1866, and also the Duchess of Orleans, the Duchess de Nemours and the Due de Conde: the bodies of the Orleans family, with the exception of that of the Duchess de Nemours, were removed to the family burying place at Dreux in France, in 1876: there is a residence for the priest attached to the chapel. The cemetery is 3 acres in extent, and has two mortuary chapels under one roof and a residence lodge for the curator: it is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members. Near the river Wey are the seed-crushing mills of Messrs. A. Whittet and Co. worked by steam and water power. Here are some remains of a palace built by Henry VIII. several of the gateways and underground passages remaining entire: the grounds, formerly part of the park, are now occupied as a nursery ground and fruit garden. On the green is a column, about 30 feet high, erected 6 August, 1822, to the memory of H.R.H, the Duchess of York, by the inhabitants of Weybridge and the vicinity. The charities amount to about £100 yearly, of which a sum of £38 yearly was bequeathed for the repairs of the church, and the remainder distributed in bread, coals and clothing among the poor. Weybridge poor land allotments are 12 ½ acres in extent, and are managed by 15 gentlemen and two cottagers, who meet twice a year; the holders pay 4d. a rod yearly, and the rents are distributed in coals annually among the poor of the village; Mr. John Lampard is clerk to the managers. The Cottage Hospital, opened in 1889 at a cost of about £2,000, defrayed by subscription, occupies a site presented by H. F. Locke-King esq. and contains three wards, with five beds. Richard Brettel esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Hugh Fortescue Locke-King esq. and H. Yool esq. J.P. The soil is sand; subsoil, gravel.
