Historical Description

WINDLESHAM is a village and parish, situated on the Berkshire border, 8 miles west-by-south from Chertsey, 1 ½ north-east from Bagshot station and 25 from London, in the North Western division of the county, Woking hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division, county court district and union, rural deanery of Woking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. John the Baptist, erected in 1680 on the destruction of the old church by lightning, and enlarged in 1874, is an edifice of red brick in the Early English and Decorated styles, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 2 bells: the east window is stained: there are 503 sittings, 341 being free. The register dates from the year 1675. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £407, net income £239, with residence and 90 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1879 by the Rev. John Minet Freshfield M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford. There is a cemetery of about a quarter of an acre in extent, under the control of a Burial Board of five members. Here are six almshouses, founded in the year 1757 by Lady Amelia Butler for six old people, the inmates being selected by the rector and churchwardens. The Institute and Reading Rooms were erected in 1880, and there are charities of about £36 10s. yearly for distribution in bread, clothing and fuel. Here are the extensive nursery grounds of Mr. Richard Mason for the culture of coniferae, rhododendrons, shrubs and trees. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor of Windlesham, and St. John’s College, Cambridge, are lords of the manor of Broomhall. The chief landowner is H. Dumbleton esq. The soil is peat, much of the land belongs to the Bagshot sand formation. The chief crops are wheat, rye, oats and pess. The area is 2,943 acres; rateable value, £14,181; the population in 1881 was 2,604.

A School Board of 5 members was formed here in 1871; George Frimbley, Bagshot, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School, built in 1825 & enlarged in 1889, for 230 children; average attendance, 170.
