Historical Description
WONERSH is a village and parish, 32 miles from London, 3 ½ south from Guildford, half a mile east from Bramley station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, and 1 ½ south-east from Shalford station on the South Eastern railway, in the South Western division of the county, hundred of Blackheath, union of Hambledon, petty sessional division and county court district of Guildford and Godalming, rural deanery of Guildford, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. John the Baptist, situated in the park and erected in 1793, is a plain structure of brick and stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave and a western tower containing 6 bells: there are 380 sittings, about 300 being free. The churchyard of this parish having been closed, interments take place at Shamley Green. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £142, with residence, in the gift of Lord Grantley, and held since 1852 by the Rev. Elihu Edmund Body M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel and a Liberal Club. A Cemetery of 1 acre was formed in 1863, at a cost of £200: it is under the control of a Burial Board of six members. The charities amount to about £94 yearly, chiefly distributed in bread, coats and other clothing. Wonersh Park, a fine demesne, is the property and residence of John Jackson Sudbury esq.; the central part of the mansion, which formed the ancient manor house, is Elizabethan, and the west wing contains tome very fine reception rooms, richly gilt; a noble library and billiard room was added by Sir Fletcher Norton, Speaker of the House of Commons (1769—82) and 1st Baron Grantley: the eastern wing was added by Fletcher, 3rd Baron Grantley, about 1836: the extensive grounds are nobly timbered and contain many choice specimens of coniferae and rare shrubs: the ancient deer park, well stocked with deer, is remarkably picturesque and beautiful, and the river Wey runs through it for some distance. The Great Tangley Manor estate, which lies in this parish, is the property of John Jackson Sudbury esq. but the old manor house belongs to Wickham Flower esq. and is an interesting specimen of a moated timber house of the Elizabethan period, with picturesque gables and finely panelled rooms, and the walls are pierced with oillets. Little Tangley is the residence of Cowley Lambert esq. M.A., M.P. The Earl of Onslow and Lord Grantley are lords of the manor. John Jackson Sudbury esq. and William Walter Henning esq. of Shamley Green, are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, mangolds and turnips. The area, including Shamley Green, which is given separately, is 4,427 acres; rateable value, £8,681; the population in 1881 was 1,771.
