Historical Description

WORPLESDON is a large parish with station on the London and South Western railway, 3 miles north-west from Guildford, in the North Western division of the county, hundred of Woking petty sessional division and union of Guildford, county court district of Guildford and Godalming, rural deanery of Guildford, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Mary, situated on an eminence called Perry Hill, is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a striking clock and 6 bells; the nave is separated from the aisles by arcades of three Pointed arches springing from circular piers, and there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £755, with residence, and 83 acres of glebe, in the gift of Eton College, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Duncan Crookes Tovey M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel and a working men’s club. The charities amount to about £24 yearly. Merrist Wood Hall is the residence of Charles P. Shrubb esq. The principal landowners are the Earl of Onslow, C. P. Shrubb and A. McKibben esqrs and Capt. F. H. Salvin, Whitmoor House, Sutton, Guildford. The manors of Worplesdon and Burpham belong to the Earl of Onslow. The soil is light sand and clay; subsoil, gravel. The area is 7,140 acres; wheat is the chief crop; rateable value, £10,812; the population in 1881 was 1,715.
