Historical Description
WOTTON is a parish, 3 miles east from Gomshall and Shere station on the South Eastern railway, and 26 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, first division of the hundred of Wotton, to which it gives name, Dorking petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dorking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester, 3 miles west-south-west from Dorking: this parish is about 9 miles in length from north to south, (extending to the Sussex border), but seldom exceeds a mile in breadth and is still narrower towards the southern extremity. The church of St. John the Evangelist is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, two monumental chapels, transept, and a western tower containing 3 bells: the most interesting object in the church is the tomb of John Evelyn, who died 27 February, 1706: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1596. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £450, net income £497, with 141 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of W. J. Evelyn esq. J.P. and held since 1875 by the Rev. George Vaughan Chichester B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Wotton and Abinger Cottage Institute was founded for the benefit of the poor of these two parishes; during the winter months, entertainments, lectures and tea meetings are provided, and there is a lending library of 622 volumes. There are charities belonging to the parish of the annual value of £56 for distribution. Wotton House, the seat of William John Evelyn esq. D.L., J.P. consists of an irregular and heterogeneous mass of buildings, chiefly interesting as having been the birthplace (October 31, 1620), of John Evelyn, the celebrated author of “Sylva:” the mansion is pleasantly situated in a valley surrounded by plantations, with an artificial stream flowing near it: the muniment room, which also serves as a library, was built in 1864, after the design of H. Woodyer esq. on the site of the west wing (destroyed by fire about 1800); among the family and local relics are the three extant portraits of John Evelyn: in the picture gallery are placed the most interesting of the pictures that yet remain of John Evelyn’s collection; and here is preserved the prayer book used by King Charles on the scaffold (January 90, 1649), and presented by Archbishop Juxon to Sir Richard Brown, father-in-law to John Evelyn. Other seats in the parish are Tanhurst, near Leith Hill, commanding an extensive view, now occupied by The Dowager Marchioness of Hertford; Jayes, the seat of Mrs. Lee Steere; Camp Hill House, the seat of Mrs. Evelyn, and Tillingbourne, of George Bonner esq. The Tillingbourne estate in this parish belongs to his Grace the Duke of Norfolk K.G. In Wotton parish is Leith Hill, 5 miles south from Dorking, the highest elevation in the south-east of England, being 966 feet above, the level of the sea; from Leith Hill the Tillingbourne stream takes its rise. Upon one of the points of this hill Mr. Richard Hull, a former owner of Leith Hill Place, with the consent of Sir John Evelyn, built in 1766, a tower, whence the sea is visible through an opening in the South Downs; Mr. Hull was, by his own particular desire, buried in this tower, and within the building on the east wall is a tablet of Portland, stone inscribed, “Underneath this floor lieth the body of Richard Hull esq. of Bristol, who departed this life January 18th, 1772, in the 83rd year of his age;” for many years after the building of the tower it was open to the public, in accordance with the intention of Mr. Hull, but as this privilege was abused, and the tower had become a harbour for smugglers, a subscription was raised about the year 1795 among the gentry in order to make it uninhabitable; the whole interior of the tower was then filled with stone and cement and the entrance door built up, and it was still in this state when the tower and land adjoining were purchased by the present lord of the manor, W. J. Evelyn esq.; so solid was the cement that as it was found impossible to re-open, the old entrance and interior staircase, a staircase lower was built by the side of the old tower in order to make it available for the original purpose: the tower commands extensive views over portions of Surrey, Sussex, Hants, Berks, Oxford, Bucks, Herts, Middlesex, Essex and Kent and, by the aid of a glass, a portion of Wiltshire can be seen. The principal landed proprietors in the parish are the Duke of Norfolk K.G. W. J. Evelyn esq. D.L., J.P. (who is lord of the manor), the trustees of the late Lee Steere esq. Roland Vaughan Williams and Mrs. Wedgwood. The soil is chiefly sand; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats &c. The area is 3,780 acres; rateable value, £4,184. The population in 1881 was 692.
Broadmoor is also in this parish, 2 miles south-east.
National Schools (mixed), built in 1874, enlarged in 1885, for 130 children; average attendance, 70.
