Historical Description

BUXTED (A. S. boc,” wood and “stede,” a place) is a village and parish with a station on the Eridge and Lewes branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 2 miles north from Uckfield, 9 ½ north-east from Lewes and 42 from London, in the Northern division of the county, Loxfield Dorset hundred, Pevensey rape, Uckfield petty sessional division and union, Lewes county court district, rural deanery of Pevensey (third division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. A small stream, tributary to the Ouse, flows through the parish. The church of St. Margaret is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a tower with spire containing 8 bells: there is a slab, with inscription to Sire Johan de Lewes, c. 1330; a brass, with half-effigy of a priest, c. 1408; six stained windows, a pulpit of ancient carved oak, and an ancient oak chest: the church affords 298 sittings: in the churchyard are the family vaults of the Baldock and D’Oyly families. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, with residence and 78 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1898 by the Rev. George Slade Pownall M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. The Rectory, the central portion of which is over 200 years old, was originally surrounded by a moat, a portion of which still remains.

The Catholic church, Heron’s Ghyll, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, and built in 1897 at the expense of James F. Hope esq. is an edifice of stone in the Early English style: there is a small burying ground close to the mission. There is also a Calvanistic chapel and a Coffee Hall and Mission Room, in which services are held. The Buxted almshouses consist of four tenements, two for single persons and two for married couples, and were built and endowed with £2,000 by the late Lady Catherine J. Vernon-Harcourt in 1864. The charities amount to about £18 yearly. Buxted Park, now occupied by Leonora C. Lady Ashburton, is the property of the Hon. Henry Berkeley Portman; the mansion stands in a well-stocked deer park of about 300 acres. Old Lands is the seat of Mrs. Nesbitt. Heron’s Ghyll is the property of James Fitzalan Hope esq. J.P. The Earl De La Warr is lord of the manor of Framfield, which also includes nearly the whole of Buxted. The principal landowners are the Hon. Henry Berkeley Portman, the Rev. John Goring M.A. of Wiston Park, the Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. Edwin W. Streeter F. R. G. S, and the trustees of the late A. Nesbitt esq. The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, sand and sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, peas, beans and hops. The area of the entire civil parish is 8,931 acres of land and 30 of water; rateable value, £10,503; population in 1891 was 2,039, which 485 were attached to the parish church.

Pound Green and Five Chimneys are 2 miles north-east; Wilderness, 3 miles east; Five Ash Down is on the borders of this parish and that of Maresfield; Shepherds Hill, 2 miles south-east.

St. Mary’s is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1884 from the civil parish of Buxted: the church, built in 1886, at a cost of about £3,000, is of flint and stone in the Gothic style, and has a tower with spire containing one bell: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1885. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £140, in the gift of the Rev. Arthur Douglas Wagner M.A. of Brighton, and held since 1890 by the Rev. John Baghot-De-la-Bere M.A. of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. The population of the parish in 1891 was 540.
