Historical Description

CHAILEY is a village and parish, with a station called Newick and Chailey, on the East Grinstead and Lewes branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 1 ½ miles north-east from the village, 6 ½ miles north from Lewes and 44 from London, on the road from Lewes to East Grinstead, and formerly gave its name to a union which is now included in the Lewes union, being in the Mid division, of the county, Street hundred, Lewes rape, petty sessional division and comity court district; rural deanery of Pevensey (third division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Peter is of stone in the Early English style, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 6 bells; the church was restored and reseated in 1878—9, at a cost of £4,100; there are four stained windows and several mural tablets; the church will seat 400 persons; the churchyard contains two very fine yew trees. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, with residence and 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of Mrs. Hepburn and J. G. Blencowe esq. as joint patrons, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas Harry Lee Jellicoe. The chapel of ease of St. Mary the Virgin, erected in 1876, at a cost of £3,500, is of stone in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 2 bells: there are three stained windows, and 200 sittings. On the South common is an iron mission room. Thompsett's charity, of £13 7s. yearly, derived from a cottage and land, left in 1770, by Thomas Thompsett, of Chailey, is for education. There is a village reading room on the Green, and a reading room at South street. The Industrial School for boys on the North Common has occupied, since 1875, the buildings of the old workhouse, and is under the management of the Brighton and Preston School Board. The Chailey Horticultural Society holds an exhibition yearly. The Newick and Chailey cattle market for fat and store stock is held here every other Monday at the “King’s Head,” and is superintended by Mr. James Richard Thornton, auctioneer, of 6 Bank buildings, Burgees Hill; sales commence at 11.30 a.m.; a corn market is also held here on the same day at 2 p.m. Ades, the property of the trustees of the late James Ingram esq. (d. 1897), is now (1899) unoccupied. Bineham is the residence of John George Blencowe esq. D.L. J.P.; The Hooke, of Mrs. Hepburn; Roeheath House, of William Greaves Cotesworth esq. J.P. and Brookhouse, of John Rainier McQueen esq. There are six manors in this place, viz.: The Rev. Sir George Croxton Shiffner bart. of Coombe Place, Lewes, is lord of the manor of Arlington; the trustees of the late James Ingram esq. of Ditchling Garden; Capt. James Robert Sclater of Newick Park; the Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. of Ditchling and Houndan; Sir William Grantham knt. justice of the High Court, of Balneath; and the Earl of Chichester of Wotton manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Hepburn, the Rev. Sir G. C. Shiffner bart. the trustees of the late James Ingram esq. J. G. Blencowe esq. the Earl of Sheffield, Sir William Grantham of Barcombe Place, the trustees of Thomas St. Leger Blaauw esq. (d. 1893), John R. McQueen esq. of Brook-house, and W. G. Cotesworth esq. of Roeheath house. The soil is strong clay, adapted for making bricks (blue and red) and all sorts of brown pottery ware. The chief crops are wheat, oats, peas and roots. This parish is extensive, containing 5,913 acres of land, inclusive of 561 acres of waste, and 26 of water; rateable value, £6,869; the population in 1891 was 1,333, including 63 in the Industrial school.
