Historical Description

CHIDDINGLY is an extensive parish and village 10 miles east from Lewes, 7 south-east from Uckfield, 5 north-west from Hailsham and 51 by road from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Shiplake, Pevensey rape, Hailsham petty sessional division and union, Lewes county court district, rural deanery of Pevensey (second division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. A small stream, called Cuckmere, (lows to the east of the parish. The church (name unknown) is an ancient building of stone, in the decorated style of the 13th century, and has a tower of Early English work with spire, containing 6 bells: there is a monument to Sir John Jefferay knt. Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer, 1578, and two memorial windows: the, church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1621. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £146, with residence and 7 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Sackville, and held since 1875 by the Rev. John Scale, of St. Aidan’s. The trustees of the late Clement Milward esq. Q.C. receive the great tithes. The Calvinists have a small chapel here. At the “Bat and Ball” a large fair for sheep, lambs and horses is held annually, on the 23rd July. Hilder’s Court is the residence of Thomas Shepherd Richardson esq. Chiddingley Place, now a farm house, and an interesting relic of the Tudor period, is at present unoccupied. The Earl of Chichester D.L. J.P. and Lord Sackville are lords of the manor. The Earl of Chichester, Count Mokronoski, T. S. Richardson, John Day and J. J. Guy esqrs. and Messrs. John Reeves and Samuel Russell are the landowners. The soil is wealden clay south portion, Hastings sand north portion; subsoil, dark gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and hops. The area of the civil parish is 4,473 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £3,505; the population in 1891 was 831 in the ecclesiastical, and 882 in the civil parish.

Hale Green is one mile north-east and Muddles Green half a mile south.

A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1875; B. Hide, Chiddingly, clerk to the board; John Porter, Chiddingly, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1848, for 160 children; average attendance, 104.
