Historical Description

COCKING, in Domesday “Cochinges,” is a parish, situated at the foot of the Downs, on the road from Midhurst to Chichester, with a station on the Chichester and Midhurst branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 3 miles south from Midhurst and 52 from London, in the North Western division of the county, Easebourne hundred, Chichester rape, Midhurst petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Midhurst, and in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church (name unknown) is of flint in the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a tower containing 3 fine bells: the church was restored in 1863 and 1896, and affords 184 sittings. The register commences in the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with residence and 27 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Henry Lawrence Randall B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a small Congregational, chapel. In 1375 the manor belonged to Richard Fitzalan, 9th Earl of Arundel K.G. and in this noble family it continued until its alienation in the reign of Elizabeth to Sir Anthony Browne kt. 1st Viscount Montagu, and it has since been parcel of the Cowdray estate. The Earl of Egmont is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is chalky; subsoil, principally clay and rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The areal is 2,593 acres of land, of which more than 600 are coppice, and 5 of water; rateable value, £2,086; the population in 1891 was 440.

National Schools (mixed & infants), built in 1870, for 150, children; average attendance, 98. Chalien’s Charity of £2 18s. 10d. yearly is applied to the support of the school.
