Historical Description

COWFOLD is a parish, on the road from Horsham to Henfield, 2 miles east from West Grinstead station on the Horsham and Shoreham branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 6 south-west from Cuckfield and 7 south-west from Horsham, in the North Western division of the county, Windham hundred, Horsham petty sessional division, Horsham union and county court district, rape of Bramber, rural deanery of Lewes (fourth division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Peter is of Sussex stone, chiefly in the Early English style, with Perpendicular additions and insertions, and has a tower containing a clock and 5 bells: there is a brass with effigy to Thomas Nelond, prior of Lewes 1433, and tablets to the Boxall, Gratwick, Madgwick, Pringle and Pierce families: the church was restored in 1876—7, at a cost of £1,800, and affords 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £395, with residence and 33 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1889 by the Rev. John Buckley Podmore B.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The vicarage house was built in 1878. St. Hugh’s Monastery, Partridge Green, Parkminster, a house of the Carthusian order, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1877 and completed in 1883, is a building of stone, in the Norman style, and includes a church, with tower and spire 180 feet high, containing a clock and 5 hells, chapter room, chapel of relics, refectory, and a library containing about 12,000 volumes: the building covers an area of about 7 ½ acres of ground: there are now (1899) 20 monks, of whom 15 are priests, besides 50 lay brothers: attached to the monastery is a guest house, lately the residence of William Percival Boxall esq. the vendor of the land on which the monastery is built, and erected by him in 1866; Rev. Paul Neyrand, prior; Rev. Peter M. de Farconnet, procurator. Heald's charity of about £1 yearly, being the interest on £35 left by Mrs. Cecilia Heald, of Cowfold, is for bread, distributed at Easter. The Public Village Hall and reading room, built and opened in 1897, at the cost of Frederick Du Cane Godman esq. is used for entertainments, and hag a lending library of 300 volumes. Ivories, a mansion in the Jacobean style, was in 1886 refitted as the residence of William Percival Gratwicke Boxall esq.; in the hall are two stained windows, and there is also a good collection of pictures. Brook Hill is the seat of Mrs. Borrer. Wallhurst Manor, a building of stone, parts of which date from the 17th century, now belongs to and is occupied by Herbert Addington Rigg esq. and Woldringfold is the residence of Charles Bulkeley Goodman esq. The. Rev. John Goring M.A. of Wiston Park, the Bishop of Chichester, Sampson Copestake esq. M.A. of Shermanbury Park, and Mr. Bridger, of Buckingham, are lords of the various manors. The principal landowners are Frederick Du Cane Godman esq. F. R. S. Philip H.C. Weekes esq. the Rev. John Goring M.A. Richard Hoper esq. Herbert Addington Rigg esq. Charles Bulkeley Godman esq. and the monks of St. Hugh's monastery. The soil is marl; subsoil, clay and marl. The chief crops are wheat, oats and tares; area, 4,474 acres of land and 27 of water; rateable value, £7,349; the population in 1891 was 945.
