Historical Description

DALLINGTON is a village and parish, situated at the western extremity of a range of hills on the road from Battle to Lewes, 7 miles north-west from Battle, 13 north-west from Hastings, 6 south-west from Roberts-bridge station on the South Eastern railway, 5 ½ from Heathfield station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, and 53 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Netherfield hundred, Battle petty sessional division and union, Hastings rape and county court district, rural deanery of Dallington, archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. In 1888 the area of this parish was reduced, except for ecclesiastical purposes, parts being assigned to Ashburnham, Brightling, and Warberton parishes. The church of St. Giles (dedicated according to the “Liber Regis,” to St. Margaret) and rebuilt with the exception of the tower in 1864, is of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 5 bells: the east window is a memorial: there are 385 sittings, 355 being free. The register dates from the year 1643. The living is a rectory and vicarage, net yearly value £175, with residence, in the gift of the Hon. John Ashburnham, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Edgar Alford Fewtrell M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and Calvinistic chapels, and a reading room with a library of 200 volumes. The principal landowners are the Earl of Ashburnham, who is lord of the manor, W. Watts esq. and Percy Tew esq. of Brightling Park.

The soil is principally light; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are corn, hops and potatoes. The area as now reduced is 1,910 acres; rateable value, £1,387; the population in 1891 was 422 in the civil and 477 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Buckwell, with 8 houses and a population of 35, was transferred to Ashburnham by Local Government Order 19,651, 24 March, 1887, and by the same Order Giffords Farm &c. with 5 houses and population of 20 was transferred from Dallington to Brightling, and by Order 19,652, Hodgkins was added to Warbleton.

National School (mixed & infants), built in 1849 & added to in 1853, for 130 children; average attendance, 90.
