Historical Description

ETCHINGHAM (or Echinham) is a parish with station on the Hastings and Tonbridge branch of the South Eastern railway, 48 miles from London and 14 miles north-west from Hastings, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Henhurst, Burwash petty sessional division, Ticehurst union, Hastings rape, and county court district, rural deanery of Dallington, archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The river Rother flows north of the parish, and a tributary called the Dudwell runs past the rectory and joins the main stream at the station. The church of SS. Mary and Nicholas is an ancient edifice of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a tower containing one bell: there are memorial brasses to the Etchingham family and three stained windows: the church was restored in 1857, and has 420 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The residence is a rectory, net yearly value £364, with 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Alfred Barber M.A. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. About a mile from Etchingham are the remains of a Roman camp. Haremere Hall, the residence of Thomas Russell J.P. contains some curious oak carvings; it was built in 1616, but has been modernised. The Earl of Chichester is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Nathan Wetherell esq. (d. 1887), George F. Gregory esq. of Hurst Green, and Thomas Russell esq. J.P. The soil is close; subsoil, clay and Hastings sands formation. The chief crops are hops. The area is 3,897 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £6,605; in 1891 the population was 904.
