Historical Description
Fletching, a small village. The parish church has a handsome spire, and in it is a monument for Richard Dalymyge, lord of the manor in the time of Edward IV.
FLETCHING is a parish on the river Ouse, with a station, called Sheffield Park, 2 ½ miles west from the village, on a branch from East Grinstead to Lewes of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, a portion of the line extending from East Grinstead to the main line, 4 miles north-west from Uckfield, 10 ½ north-east from Lewes and 40 from London, in the Northern division of the county, Rushmonden hundred, Pevensey rape, Uckfield petty sessional division and union, Lewes county court district, rural deanery of Pevensey (third division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of SS. Mary the Virgin and Andrew is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, and hag a tower of Norman date, with spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: the church was restored in 1880 at a cost of £7,000: there are 470 sittings. Distinct traces remain of the Norman church, erected on the same site at the end of the 11th century. Edward Gibbon, the historian, who died 16th January, 1794, is here buried: some of the windows are filled with stained glass found buried in the churchyard: there is a monument to Richd. Leche esq. ob.1596, and his wife; two brasses and memorials to the Holroyd family, Earls of Sheffield. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £173, with residence and 13 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Sheffield, and held since 1898 by the Rev. John Pile. Louisa Lady Shelley is the lay impropriator of the great tithes. The churchyard was enlarged in 1859, the new portion being under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members. The Fletching reading and recreation rooms, erected in 1889, are managed by a committee, and have a house attached for the caretaker. The charities amount to about £80 yearly. Sheffield Park is the seat of the Earl of Sheffield D.L. J.P.; the mansion stands in a park of 650 acres, containing some fine timber and four large pieces of water. Searles is the seat of George Maryon Maryon-Wilson esq. J.P. The Earl of Sheffield, George M. Maryon-Wilson esq. and Lady Shelley are owners of the manors and principal landowners. The soil is sandy and clay; subsoil, stone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and hops.
The area is 8,464 acres, a great portion of which is wood and common land, and 58 of water; rateable value, £6,080; the population in 1891 was 2,446 in the civil and 1,171 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Portions of Chelwood Common, in this parish, have been inclosed.
