Historical Description

FRANT is a village, parish and head of a petty sessional division, situated on the brow of a hill, on the road to Hastings, with a station, 1 ½ miles south-east from the village, on the Hastings and Tonbridge branch of the South Eastern railway, 2 ½ miles south from Tunbridge Wells and 36 from London, and is partly in Kent (hundred of Washlingstone), and partly in the Eastern division of Sussex, in the hundred of Rotherfield, rape of Pevensey, Ticehurst union, Tunbridge Wells county court district, rural deanery of Pevensey (fourth division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Alban is of stone, in the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there are several memorial windows, as well as monuments to the Nevill, Weller and Brown families: in 1881 a brass eagle lectern was presented, in memory of Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe K.G. G. C. B. who died at Frant Court, August 14, 1880, aged 93: the interior was repaired and re-seated in 1880 at a cost of £1,200, and has 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1543. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £390, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. and held since 1887 by the Rev. William Champion Streatfeild M. A of Trinity College, Cambridge. The rectory house was considerably enlarged in 1845, and in 1880 a sum of about £1,000 was expended in repairs and alterations. An undenominational chapel was erected in 1874. A reservoir for supplying Tunbridge Wells with water is in this parish. In 1862 a deep well with wheel pump was sunk on the London road, by public subscription, and it was restored in June, 1887. The charities are £26 6s. 7d. arising from a bequest of £5 yearly, by Thomas Weller in 1667, which is distributed in bread, and one of £14, left by will, dated April 24, 1627, by Henry Smith of Wandsworth, and Alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628. The Convalescent Home for Children is supported partly by subscriptions and by small payments; there is accommodation for 40 children. The Borough of Tunbridge Wells Sanatorium, opened in 1874, and enlarged in 1895, is an hospital for infectious diseases, and has accommodation for 54 scarlet fever cases and a separate wing for smallpox cases; the building and grounds cover acres. Shemfold Park is the seat of the Hon. John Ashburnham J.P.; the mansion is of Kentish ragstone, in the Italian style, and was built by the late Hon. Percy Ashburnham in 1855. Frant Court is the seat of the Hon. Misses Canning; Knole, of Col. Sheffield Hamilton-Grace J.P. and Ely Grange, of John Waddington esq. The principal landowners are the Marquess Camden, the Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. (who are lords of the manor), and the Hon. John Ashburnhem. The soil is clay; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are hops and corn. The area is 8,655 acres; rateable value, £13,425; the population in 1891 was 1,887.

Broadwater Down ecclesiastical parish was formed from the parishes of Frant and Eridge Green, June 28, 1867; it is now a civil parish, in the administrative county of Kent.

National, founded in 1816, rebuilt in 1852, for 310 children; average attendance, 75 boys, 79 girls & 51 infants.
