Historical Description

IFIELD is a parish, 1 ½ miles north-west from Crawley station on the Three Bridges and Horsham line of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, and 7 north-east from Horsham and 31 from London, in the North Western division of the county, hundred of Burbeach, though locally in that of Singlecross, Horsham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rape of Bramber, rural deanery of Lewes (third division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Margaret is of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, and has a tower containing 2 bells: in the church are recumbent figures of a knight and lady, and there are two stained windows: the church affords 380 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1568; burials, 1569. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £160, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of Mrs. M. E. Lewin, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Walter Loveband M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. The new church of St. Peter, at West Green, was erected at a cost of rather more than £2,800, and was consecrated in 1893: there are 430 sittings. The mission church of St. Mary Magdalene at West Green is now used as a church room. Here also is a meeting house for the Society of Friends. Ifield Park, the property of Mrs. Lloyd, and now occupied by W. H. Penning esq. F. G. S. is a modern mansion standing in a park of 24 acres. Goffs Hill is the residence of Henry Hobson Finch esq. The manor is in private hands. Thomas Henry Lewin, George Trist and T. W. Chester esqs. are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly strong clay and marl; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and swedes. The area is 4,138 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £15,461; and the population in 1891 was 2,817.
