LANCING is a pleasant village and parish on the sea-coast, with a station at Lower Lancing on the Brighton and Portsmouth line of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 58 ¾ miles from London, 2 west from Shoreham and 2 east from Worthing, on the road between the two towns, in the Mid division of the county, Brightford hundred, Bramber rape, Steyning union and petty sessional division, Worthing county court district, rural deanery of Storrington (fourth division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The parish is bounded on the east by the river Adur and on the south by the English Channel. The church of St. James is of flint, in the Early English and later styles, and has a tower containing 3 bells, dated 1633 and 1660: there are several memorial windows, an Easter sepulchre of stone, and many monuments of modern date: the church affords sittings for 405 persons. The register of marriages and burials dates from the year 1559; baptisms from 1574. The living is a vicarage, net income £117, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Edmund Peel M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Almshouses were erected in 1882 by certain members of the Penfold family, for the poor of this parish. The Home of Best, for men, women and children, was founded in 1890, and contains 100 beds. Remains of a building were discovered near Lancing Ring in 1828, in which British and Roman objects, including coins from A. D. 41 to A. D. 260 were found. Lancing Manor, at Upper Lancing, the property of James Martin Carr-Lloyd esq. J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner, is now the residence of W. Sugden Armitage esq. The soil is loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and mangold wurtzel. The area is 2,505 acres of land, 25 of water, 29 of tidal water and 467 of foreshore; rateable value, £10,264; the population in 1891 was 1,285, including the occupants of the two coastguard stations and 15 at Shoreham Redoubt.
SS. Mary and Nicolas College Was founded in 1848, the first stone of the central building being laid March 21, 1854, by the founder, Dr. Woodard; the college is situated in an estate of about 250 acres and is built of dressed flint with enrichments of stone; in plan it forms three sides of a square, with a surrounding corridor, a chapel and master's house completing the quadrangle; the chapel, a building of dressed freestone in the Early English style, is still in course of erection; this college, which is the central society for the south of England of a collegiate federation of five colleges, three of which are already in operation, embraces first, at Lancing, a school giving instruction to fit toys for the universities, the army and navy, the Civil and Indian services; secondly, at Hurstpierpoint, a school for the sons of professiona men of limited means, of farmers and of tradesmen; thirdly, at Ardingly, a school for the sons of those of narrow means who are yet unwilling to give their children only an ordinary parish education. In addition to these boys’ schools, St. Nicholas College has in connection with it a school for girls at Bognor. Two fellowships, founded by trustees under the will of the late Rev. John Cleath-ing, were filled up in 1857 and there are also the following scholarships and exhibitions:-1. The Provost’s scholarships, at present three in number, in the gift of the Provost. 2. There are also exhibitions varying from 30 guineas to 50 guineas yearly, awarded after examination in June or July of each year, besides some non-competitive exhibitions, of 25 guineas yearly, for sons of old boys, clergy, and officers of the army and navy. An exhibition, not exceeding 30 guineas yearly for three years, is given to every boy who gains from the school an open scholarship at Oxford or Cambridge, if the college is satisfied that he needs such aid; and also, under the same restriction, to every boy who gains from the school admission to the Indian civil service, the amount depending in some measure upon the boy’s place in the list, and other circumstances. The central colleges, in addition to their provost and fellows, comprise each a foundation of associates, university exhibitioners and scholars, but the endowments at present are but slight; their property is held by trustees and is secured for the purposes of education in the principles of the Church of England by deeds of trust enrolled in Chancery.
