Historical Description

LOWER BEEDING is an extensive parish 8 miles in length, 4 south-east from Horsham station, on the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway, in the North, Western division of the comity, hundred of Burheach, rape of Bramber, Horsham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Lewes (fourth division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diecese of Chichester. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1840, is of stone, in the Early English style; it was enlarged in 1864 and has a tower, with spire, containing a clock and 9 bells; six of the windows are stained and there are sittings for 350 persons, 150 being free. The register dates from the year 1840. The living is a vicarage, net income £110, with residence and 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of William Egerton Hubbard esq. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Robert Walter Powell M. A of Trinity College, Cambridge. St. Leonards Forest, constituted a district chapelry by Act of Parliament in 1838, is in this parish. St. John the Baptist’s chapel of ease in St. Leonards Forest, near to Coolhurst, is of stone, and has a turret containing 1 bell; four of the windows are stained; it was restored in 1889 at a cost £3,300, and affords about 100 sittings. Crabtree Hall, erected in 1875 by the late W. E. Hubbard esq. (d. 1883) and now the property of Sir E. G. Loder bart. is used, by kind permission of the owner, as a workmen’s club for the parish, which has a library of 500 volumes. Leonardslee is the seat of Sir Edmund Giles Loder bart. M.A. J.P. and Selehurst, of William Egerton Hubbard esq. J.P.; South Lodge, of Frederick Du Cane Godman esq. F. R. S. F.S.A.; Roffey Park, of James Innes esq. D.L. J.P.; and Beedingwood, of the Rev. Edward Douglas Lennox Harvey M.A. The trustees of Robert B. Aldridge esq. who are lords of the manor, Col. James Clifton Brown, of Holmbush, Colgate, Sir E. G. Loder bart. Charles Robert Scrase-Dickins esq. of Coolhurst, Eric Carrington Smith esq. of Slaugham, Philip Saillard esq. of Buchan hill, and L. M. Reed esq. are the principal landowners. The soil varies much from light sand to heavy clays, and is suitable for all kinds of crops. The area of the civil parish is 10,032 acres of land and 121 are water; rateable value, £10,222 2s. 3d.; the population in 1891 was civil, 1,284; ecclesiastical, 799.
