Historical Description

Midhurst is an ancient borough by prescription, eleven miles from Chichester, governed by a bailiff, who is chosen annually at the court leet of the lord of the borough. The town is neat and well built, situated on the side of the river Arun.

Midhurst is remarkable for the salubrity of the air and longevity of its inhabitants, and near the town is a chalybeate water, perhaps not inferior to any. There is a Free Grammar School of some celebrity, in the town, for twelve boys, founded November 15th, 1672, by Gilbert Hanman.

Near Midhurst is Cowdry, once the magnificent seat of Lord Montague, richly adorned with paintings of Hans Holbein, and other masters; burned down with its furniture in the year 1793, and nearly about the same time the noble owner, together with Mr. Burdett, his fellow traveller, was drowned in the river Rhine, rashly venturing to sail down the cataracts at Schaffhausen.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MIDHURST is an ancient union town, head of a petty sessional division and county court district and parish, 50 miles from London, 12 north from Chichester and 6 ½ west from Petworth, in the North Western division of the county, Chichester rape, and rural deanery of Petworth and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester; it is pleasantly situated on a gentle eminence near the river West Rother, which communicates with the Arun, the Wey and the Thames, and, abounding in charming scenery and beautiful walks, is much frequented by visitors during the summer months. This was a borough by prescription, returning two members to Parliament, pursuant to 4 Ed. II. (1310—11), until the passing of the “Reform Act, 1832,” (2 and 3 Wm. IV. c.45), by which the representation was reduced to one member; by the “Redistribution of Seats Act, 1885,” (48 and 49 Vict. c. 23), the representation of the borough was merged into that of the county. The town was governed by a bailiff, elected annually, until this office was abolished by the “Municipal Corporations Act, 1883,” (46 and 47 Vict. ch. 18). The place is lighted with gas by a company formed in 1860, and supplied with water from springs. There are two lines of railway to this town-the London, Brighton and South Coast Company, from Pulborough to Chichester, opened in July, 1881, and that of the South Western Company, from Petersfield. The church of SS. Mary Magdalene and Denis, formerly a chapel of the neighbouring priory of Easebourne, is of stone, in the Later English style, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1882 the church was restored, the ancient tower and other portions being retained: the stained east window is a memorial to the late Rev. William Bayly D. D. formerly headmaster of the Grammar school, and there are several others, besides monuments to the Rev. Serenus Barrett, incumbent, d. 24 December, 1757, and others: the church affords 650 sittings. The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £70, in the gift of the Earl of Egmont, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Sydney Montgomery Campbell. The Catholic church, erected in 1868, and dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, is of sandstone, in the Early English style, and has sittings for 60 persons. There are also Calvinistic, Baptist and Congregational chapels. The cemetery, on Midhurst common, on an elevated position facing towards the South Downs, and opened in November, 1877, has an area of nearly 3 acres but only about 2 ¾ are consecrated. It is controlled by a Burial Board of 9 members, formed in 1876. The Midhurst Public Hall and Assembly Room, opened 15 Feb. 1882, contains a ball 70 feet by 35 feet, with galleries on three sides and corridors underneath, and a platform at the west end, and has retiring rooms, lavatories &c. in the rear; the hall will hold 1,000 persons, and there is also a library and reading rooms. The Midhurst Coffee Tavern, in the Market square, a house of some antiquity, and the birthplace of three generations of the Cobden family, was opened for the above purpose in March, 1890. The Young Men’s Institute occupies three rooms at the back, with a separate entrance. Fairs are held on the 6th of April and 29th October. The principal hotels are the “Angel,” in North street and the “Spread Eagle,” in South street. A weekly Conservative newspaper, the “Midhurst Times,” is printed and published here every Friday evening. At the northern entrance of the town are almshouses, comprising four tenements, and there are others. In the year 1586 George Ognell esq. made a feoffment of certain lands in Midhurst, Heyshott, Chilgrove and Minsted, in Sussex, and Hambledon and Southwick in Hants, to 12 feoffees, upon trust, to distribute the revenues towards the relief of the poor of the borough town and parish of Midhurst, and to such other charitable purposes as the feoffees for the time being should think fit; in 1876 the whole of the estates (with the exception of the almshouses in Midhurst) was sold under the direction of the Charity Commissioners; the income of this charity is about £243 yearly, and in 1880 a scheme prepared by the Charity Commissioners came into operation, by which a portion of the income was directed to be paid to the Midhurst Grammar school, and other alterations made as to the appropriation of the income. A mound on the south bank of the West Rother was the site of the castle of the Bohuns, of which nothing now remains above ground; the fosse may still be traced. The possessions of the Order of Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem still form a liberty, granted by Henry VIII. to Sir William Fitzwilliam and then annexed to the Cowdray estate; this district extended into several parishes and enjoyed special privileges; the commandery, or abode of the order, was pulled down in 1811. On the opposite side of the river was the mansion of Great Todham, built in 1606 by George Dennis, of which only the vaults now exist. Heathfield Lodge is the residence of Col. Charles John Wvndham, and Ashfield House, of Mrs. Hy. Back. Gerald Smith esq. is lord of the borough of Midhurst, and the Earl of Egmont lord of the manor and liberty of St. John. Area of the parish, 658 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £7,999; the population in 1891 was 1,674.
