Historical Description

ORE is a parish north-east of Hastings, mostly within the borough of Hastings by the Local Government Boards Provisional Order’s Confirmation (No. 17) Act, 1897, and the parish has been, for civil purposes, renamed St. Helen’s. The old church of St. Helen, an edifice chiefly of Perpendicular date, is now in ruins, little remaining except the tower: the church erected near it is of stone, in the Gothic style, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and one bell: the stained east window was given by the late Dr. J. Harding, Bishop of Bombay 1851—69: there are 325 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £230, with 20 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Simeon trustees, and held since 1897 by the Rev. William Charleston Bullock M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge.

Christ Church is an ecclesiastical parish, formed out of that of Ore in July, 1887. The church on the Old London road, 1 mile from Fairlight, is of stone, in the Decorated style, and has a turret containing one bell: there are 550 sittings. The registers date from the year 1887. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £158, in the gift of Simeon’s trustees, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Charles Ough Th. Assoc. K. C. L. The population of the ecclesiastical parish of Christ Church in 1891 was 3,640. The Wesleyan chapel here seats about 200 persons, and there is a Congregational mission hall at Redlake. The Hastings Union Workhouse, the Hastings Cemetery and the Hastings Borough Sanatorium are all situated here. Fairlight Down is within the parish. Ore Place is the property of Henry John Farmer-Atkinson esq. J.P. Coghurst Hall, a mansion situated in a fine park, is occupied by Mrs. Goghill. Miss Brisco, of St. Leonards, is lady of the manor and the principal landowner.

ORE (beyond Hastings) forms part of a parish, the greater portion of which has been added to the municipal borough of Hastings, by “Local Government Boards Provisional Orders Confirmation (No. 17) Act, 1897.” The portion taken into the borough was annexed to Blacklands, and constitutes a civil parish. It is in the Eastern division of the county, Baldslow hundred, Hastings rape, petty sessional division, county court district and union, and in the rural deanery of Hastings (first division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The old church of St. Helen, an edifice chiefly of Perpendicular date, is now in ruins, little remaining except the tower; the new church erected near it is of stone in the Gothic style, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and one bell: the east window is stained and the church affords 325 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £230, in the gift of Simeon trustees, and held since 1897 by the Rev. William Charleston Bullock M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Coghurst Hall, a mansion in a fine park, is the seat of Harry Coghill esq. J.P. Miss Brisco is lady of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is heavy loam; subsoil, clay. The approximate area of the parish as reduced is 1,203 acres; rateable value, £3,716.

The children of the parish attend the Hastings schools.
