Historical Description

PATCHAM is a parish, pleasantly situated, 3 miles north from Brighton on the road to London and on the verge of the South Downs, constituting Dean hundred, in the Mid division of the county, Lewes rape, Steyning union, Hove petty sessional division, Brighton county court district, rural deanery of Lewes (second division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of All Saints is of flint with stone facings in the Early English and Decorated styles, with some Perpendicular portions, and has a tower with spire containing 3 bells; there is a curiously carved stone monument to Richard Shelley esq.1594, and brasses to Ann, wife of Anthony Stapley, 1637, and to many others of this name; the stained east window is a memorial; the church was restored in 1883—4, a cost of £517, when a wall painting of the “Doom” was discovered, and a south aisle was added in 1898; there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £230, with acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Sydney Benjamin Field. Patcham Place, erected in the early part of the, reign of Queen Elizabeth, is situate on the Downs, and flanked by a hanging wood, intersected with walks and bounded by the road from London to Brighton; it is now occupied by the Rev. Frederic Anthony Stapley M.A. The Marquess of Abergavenny K.G. who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late Nathaniel Kemp, Chaloner Curwen esq. and B. T. Rogers-Tilstone esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is chalk; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips, with some pasture. The area is 4,424 acres; rateable value, £17,665; the population in 1891 was 1,064.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 2 Oct. 1874; E. Cripps, Steyning, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), open 10th May, 1877, for 120 children; average attendance, 110.

Truant School (under the Brighton & Preston School Board), opened in 1882, for 40 truant boys, who are also received from the large towns in the country.
