Historical Description
PATCHING is a parish on the high road from Worthing to Chichester, 3 ½ miles north-east from Angmering station on the Brighton and Portsmouth section of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 6 north-west from Worthing and 55 from London, constituting a hundred by itself, in the South Western division of the county, Bramber rape, Worthing county court district, Arundel petty sessional division, East Preston union, rural deanery of Storrington (fourth division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. John the Divine is of flint in the Early English style, and has a tower with spire containing one bell; it was restored in 1889, and affords 130 sittings. The register dates from 1561. The living, formerly a peculiar of Canterbury, is a rectory, united to that of Clapham, net yearly value £85, with residence and 7 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs. Somerset, of Castle Goring, alternately, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Arthur Henry Sanxay Barwell M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, prebendary of Chichester, and rural dean of Storrington (Div. 4), who resides at Clapham. The Duke of Norfolk E. M. K.G. who is lord of the manor, is the principal landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 1,767 acres; rateable value, £1,265; the population in 1891 was 270.
