The church of St. John is of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower of reputed Saxon date containing a clock and 2 bells: there are several stained windows: the stone staircase of the rood loft now leads to the pulpit: in the church is a tablet with a quaint inscription to Thomas Johnson, huntsman to the Duke of Richmond, who died at Charlton, Dec. 20, 1774: the church was restored in 1863, and affords 320 sittings. The register commences in the year 1558. The living is a discharged rectory, net yearly value £95, with residence, built in 1869, and 36 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Duke of Richmond K.G. and held since 1895 by the Rev. In 1628, Henry Smith esq. merchant, of Wandsworth, and Alderman of London, by will dated April 24, 1627, left £70 yearly, out of which about ten old people received 2s. 6d. a week, the balance being distributed in food and clothing. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,063 acres; rateable value, £3,715; the population in 1891, with the hamlet of Charlton, was 579.
