Historical Description

THAKEHAM, called in Domesday “Taceham,” is a parish, village, and head of a union, pleasantly situated on rising ground, 5 miles south-east from Pulborough station on the Horsham and Midhurst section, and 7 north-west from Steyning station, on the Horsham and Shoreham branch, of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 10 south-east from Petworth, 11 north from Worthing, 12 south-by-west from Horsham, 18 north-west from Brighton, and 54 from London, in the South Western division of the county, East Easwrith hundred, Steyning petty Sessional division, Petworth county court district, rape of Bramber, rural deanery of Storrington (third division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, with Perpendicular insertions, and has a tower containing 5 bells: the church was restored in 1893: there are 200 sittings, all free. The register dates from the year 1628. The living is a rectory, net income £400, with residence and 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of H. R. Hurst esq. and held since 1881 by the Rev. John Palmer Hurst M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. At the north-west corner of the parish is a cottage belonging to and used for religious services by the Society of Friends, and called “Blue Idol.” George Carew Carew-Gibson esq. of Kingsfold, Billingshurst, is lord of the manor. George Edward Lear esq. the Duke of Norfolk K.G. and Thomas Fladgate Harris esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, rock and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips, beans and peas. The area is 2,937 acres; assessable value, £1,879; the population in 1891 was 486, including 87 officers and inmates of the workhouse, in the civil parish and 494 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Spear Hill is a detached portion, situate in Ashington parish; and Mutton’s Farm is another detached part, in Washington parish.

By the Divided Parishes Act, a detached part of Thakeham, known as Carlstone, with a population of 81, has been annexed to West Chiltington.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 2 Oct. 1874; Arthur F. Mant, Storrington, clerk to the board.

Board School, built in 1875, for 90 children; average attendance, 60.

THAKEHAM UNION

Board day, every alternate Tuesday, at the Workhouse.

The union comprises 18 parishes, viz.:-Amberley, Ashington, Cold Waltham, Findon, Greatham, Hardham, North Stoke, Parham, Pulborough, Rackham, Storrington, Sullington, Thakeham, Warminghurst, Washington, West Chiltington, Wiggonholt & Wiston. The population of the union in 1891 was 8,049; area, 40,636 acres; assessable value in 1898, £43,082.
