Historical Description

UPPER BEEDING is a parish, about half a mile south-east from Bramber railway station, 10 north-west from Brighton, 4 miles north from Shoreham, and 53 from London, on the river Adur (which is navigable for small vessels), in the Mid division of the county, Burbeach hundred, Bramber rape, Steyning petty sessional division and union, Brighton county court district, rural deanery of Lewes (fourth, division), archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Peter is of flint and stone, and has a tower of Norman date, containing 8 bells, 2 of which were added in 1897, as a memorial of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee; the church was restored in 1852, and in 1892 the churchyard was enlarged by the addition of a portion of the vicar’s garden; there are 260 sittings. The register dates from the year 1544. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £1 10s. only, derived from a small cottage and garden, in the gift of Magdalen College, Oxford (to whom the commuted tithe rent-charge, value £650, belongs), and held since 1891 by the Rev. Henry Duffield Meyrick M.A. and formerly chaplain of that college, who is also rector of Bramber with Botolph’s. The Rev. Henry Allen, by will dated April 29th, 1720, left the yearly sum of £5, arising from an estate in Findon, to be given to four poor widows, being inhabitants of Beeding and not in receipt of parochial relief. This parish includes the site of the priory of Seal or Sele, founded in 1075 by William de Braose, but of which no remains of the priory now exist. Two acres of land, rented by the vicar, and sub-let by him to the inhabitants, as allotments, have since been transferred to the Parish Council. Freshcombe lodge, is the residence of Louis H. Blackmore esq. Harry Bridger esq. of Old Shoreham, who is lord of the manor, Lord Leconfield, Col. Edw. J. Stracey-Clitherow, of Brentford, Middlesex, the Rev. John Goring M.A. of Wiston Park, Lieut.-Col. Thomas Faulconer Wisden, of Broadwater, Henry Percival Hart esq. of Brighton, and the Rev. Robert Poole Hooper M.A. of 31, Cambridge road, Brighton, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed, subsoil, mixed. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and peas. The area is 3,975 acres of land, 14 of tidal water and 7 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,603; the population in 1891 was 506.
