Historical Description

WARNHAM is a village and parish on the road from Horsham to Dorking, with station, about 1 mile east on the Horsham and Dorking branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 33 miles from London by road and 3 north from Horsham, in the North Western division of the county, Singlecross hundred, rape of Bramber, Horsham petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Storrington (second division), and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The village is somewhat extensive and consists principally of two long narrow streets; the parish extends to the Surrey border. The church of St. Margaret is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, and has a tower containing a clock with chimes and 8 bells: there are monuments with effigies to the Caryll family, and eight stained windows: the church was enlarged and repaired in 1847—8, and the churchyard enlarged in 1875; in 1885—6 the church was rebuilt at a cost of £9,000: there are 400 sittings, one-third being free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, with 6 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Charles James Lucas esq. J.P. and held since 1882 by the Rev. Richard Bowcott M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. The vicarage house was built in 1872. A Village Hall and Club was erected in 1893 by Sir Henry Harben, at a cost of £3,500, and has an endowment of £4,000, and a library of 500 volumes. Warnham Court, the seat of Charles James Lucas esq. V. D. J.P. is a mansion of stone, erected in 1828, and surrounded by a well-timbered deer park. On the south-west side of the parish is Field Place, the birthplace (4th of August, 1792) of Percy Bysshe Shelley, the poet; here he spent much of his early life, and on Warnham pond, a wide sheet of water, he used to amuse his boyish days with a diminutive boat; this house is the property of the trustees of the late Sir Percy F. Shelley bart. and now the residence of Lieutenant-General George Edward Baynes. Warnham Lodge, the residence of Sir Henry Harben D.L. J.P. stands in-well-wooded grounds of 50 acres. A water tower, 120 feet in height, with a reservoir holding 23,000 gallons, was erected by Sir Henry Harben in 1894. Lt.-Col. T. Falconer Wisden, of Broadwater, is lord of the manors of Warnham and Den in Warnham. James Henry T. Broadwood esq. Edmund Farmer esq. the trustees of the late Sir Percy Florence Shelley bart. (d. 1890), C. J. Lucas esq. and Sir Henry Harben are the chief landowners. The soil is a heavy day; subsoil, in some parts clay loam, in others stiff clay, including a good bed of clay which is used for making the best red bricks. The chief crops are wheat and oats. Area, 4,960 acres; rateable value, £7,950; the population in 1891 was 1,060.
