ANSLEY, in Domesday “Hanslei," is a parish on the road from Nuneaton to Coleshill, about 3 miles north from Arley station on the Birmingham and Leicester branch of the Midland railway, 5 west-by-north from Nuneaton, and 102 from London, in the North-eastern division of the county, Atherstone division of Hemlingford hundred, Atherstone petty sessional division and union, Nuneaton county court district, rural deanery of Atherstone, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Laurence is an ancient building of red stone with some remains of Early Norman work, including a door on the north side; it consists of chancel, nave, vestry or the site of the old south porch and a massive western tower 75 feet high, with continuous buttresses, surmounted by four high pinnacles and containing 3 bells: the chancel arch is Norman: in a recess on the north side of nave, is a small but ancient stone coffin, found during the restoration in 1894: in the graveyard is the base of an ancient cross: the church was partially restored in 1894, and has 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1637. The living is a discharged vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £76; net yearly value £160 including 26 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1892 by the Rev. Charles Heaton M.A. of University College, Durham. The trustees of the late W. S. Dugdale esq. are the lay impropriators of the tithes, amounting to £220. Here is a Congregational chapel. Near this village is Ansley Hall, a noble mansion, the property and formerly the seat of John Newdigate Francis Ludford-Astley esq. D.L. but now in the occupation of the Ansley Hall Coal and Iron Company, Limited: in a sequestered part of the grounds is a hermitage, built from the stones of an ancient oratory, where the poet Warton, when visiting at Ansley in 1758, wrote some lines which Shenstone, to whom they were sent, describes as “extremely tender and elegant.” This place formed part of the possessions of the famous Countess Godiva, wife of Leofric, Earl of Leicester, and was for many ages subsequently held by this family of Hardeshall or Ardeshille. J. N. F. Ludford-Astley esq. is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late late John Palmer esq. and the trustees of the late William Stratford Dugdale esq. are the principal landowners. There are charities for the poor, school and repair of the roads, yearly value about £90. The soil is stiff reddish clay; subsoil, clay. Coal and iron abound in the parish, and are being worked by the Ansley Hall Coal and Iron Company Limited. The chief crops are wheat, oats, peas and beans. The area of the parish is 2,800 acres; rateable value, £5,304; the population in 1891 was 951.

National School (mixed), rebuilt, with master’s house, in 1872; it will hold 120 children; average attendance, 110.
