Historical Description
ARROW, in Domesday “Arve,” is a parish on the road to Evesham, and pleasantly seated on the banks of the river Arrow, 1 mile south of Alcester station on the Midland railway, in the South-Western division of the county, Barlichway hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Alcester, rural deanery of Alcester and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of the Holy Trinity, granted by Robert, Earl of Leicester (temp. Henry II.), to the monks of Leicester, is an edifice of stone, still exhibiting, in spite of repeated alterations, traces of considerable antiquity, and consists of chancel with aisle (added by the late Admiral Meynell, in memory of his aunt, a former Marchioness of Hertford), nave, north aisle, built by subscription in 1865, and an embattled tower, a semi-Palladian and semi-Gothic structure, with pinnacles at the angles, rebuilt in 1767 in the style of that period, and containing 1 bell: the south wall of the nave retains a plain semicircular-headed Norman doorway, and in the chancel and nave are piscinae, one of which has a projecting basin within an ogee-headed arch; a few fragments of ancient stained glass also remain: the church was restored in 1865 at a cost of £2,000, and contains several memorial windows to Mrs. Carleton, Admiral Meynell, the Rev. H. C. Carleton, Lady Seymour, and the late Marquess of Hertford: partly recessed in the south wall of the chancel is a handsome monument of Devonshire marble, with recumbent effigy in white marble in the uniform of an admiral, executed by his son-in-law, the late Admiral H.S.H. Prince Victor of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, to the late Sir George Francis Seymour C.B., G.C.H. admiral of the fleet, eldest son of Vice-Admiral Lord Hugh Conway Seymour and the Lady Horatio Seymour, who died 20 Jan. 1870: there is also a tablet by Prince Victor to the Right Hon. Sir George Hamilton Seymour G.C.B., G.C.H., P.C. ambassador to Vienna, who died 2nd Feb. 1880: in the new vault are deposited the remains of Admiral Sir George and Lady Seymour, as well as of General the Marquess of Hertford G.C.B. their son, who died Jan. 25th, 1884, from injuries sustained in hunting the fine alabaster reredos was erected to the memory of the late Marquess by his widow the Dowager Marchioness: there is also here the stone lid of the coffin of Sir Gerard de Camville 1303; and brasses to Edward 3rd Viscount and Earl Conway, d. 1683: Field Marshal the Right Hon. Henry Seymour Conway P.C. d. 1795; Vice-Admiral Hugh Seymour, d. 1801; a tablet to other members of the family, from Frances V. Conway, d. 1671, to Francis John Seymour Conway, d. 1842 and the late Marquess of Hertford, d. 25 Jan. 1884: the chancel pavement was the gift of the late Marquess: there are 337 sittings, 150 being free. The register dates from the year 1588. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £506, net yearly value £376, including 3 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Hertford, and held since 1863 by the Rev. Beauchamp Walter Stannus M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The rectory house, partly rebuilt and thoroughly restored in 1866, is pleasantly situated in a picturesque vale contiguous to the church. Shortly after the Conquest this place was granted to Roger Marmion, lord of Tamworth: it was next held successively, and in each case through intermarriage with an heiress, by the families of Camville and Burdett, the latter possessing it till the reign of Henry VII. when the family of Conway, also by marriage, obtained a portion of these estates: this family, subsequently ennobled, 22nd March, 1624, became Barons, and in 1679, Earls Conway, of Ragley, but the title, through failure of issue, lapsed in 1683, when Francis Seymour esq. having, under the will of the late Earl, succeeded to the estates, assumed the name and arms of Conway, and was created 17th March, 1703, Baron Conway, of Ragley, from whom the present possessor, the Marquess of Hertford, is descended.
Ragley Hall, the seat of the Marquess of Hertford P.C., D.L., J.P. is a splendid mansion in the Italian style, built by Lord Conway about the middle of the 18th century, and afterwards altered by Wyatt; it has four fronts, and being situated upon high ground and surrounded by attractive scenery, acquires a nobility of appearance considerably beyond its intrinsic merits as a building: the principal entrance is from the east, leading into a spacious hall 80 feet long, 40 broad and 45 feet high, with a richly carved ceiling; from an adjoining hall ascend two grand staircases of polished oak: the various apartments of the mansion contain a collection of paintings by Titian, Vandyke, Rubens, Sir Joshua Reynolds and other eminent masters, and there is a very extensive library containing nearly 30,000 volumes. The park, 500 acres in extent, is adorned with a broad lake covering about 10 acres and enriched with majestic oaks; herds of spotted deer wander through its groves and a heronry of many generations imparts an ancient dignity to the demesne. The Marquess of Hertford is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil and subsoil are various, The chief crops are wheat, beans and barley. The area of Arrow is 2,611 acres of land and 23 of water; rateable value, £2,962; the population in 1891 (exclusive of Oversley) was 397.
School (mixed), erected in 1866, at a cost of £700, for about 120 children; average attendance, 102. A class room for 40 children was added in 1884.
