Historical Description

ASHOW, in Domesday “Asceshot,” in subsequent records “Esseho,” and in the time of Edward I. written “Assche,” is a parish and village, pleasantly seated on the river Avon, near to Stoneleigh, 2 ½ miles east-south-east from Kenilworth station on the Leamington and Nuneaton branch of the London and North Western railway, 3 ½ north from Leamington and 4 north-east from Warwick, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Kenilworth division of the hundred of Knightlow, Kenilworth petty sessional division, union and county court district of Warwick, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Mary, standing in a beautiful situation near the river Avon, which flows alongside the churchyard on the south, is an ancient edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 4 bells; the chancel, which is the oldest portion, has a north wall of great thickness, and contains two lesser windows, now filled up; the most interesting feature connected with this church is its superb and perfect set of communion plate, given by Alicia, Duchess Dudley, in 1638, and valued at £400; over the communion table is an ancient oil painting of the “Crucifixion the church affords 130 sittings. The earlier registers of the parish were ignorantly or recklessly destroyed 40 or 50 years since by the then parish clerk, who, being a publican, cut them up to make spills for his customers to light their pipes with. The existing register dates only from 1733. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £193, net yearly value £200, including 12 acres of glebe in the parish of Ashow and 45 acres in the parish of Mancetter, near Nuneaton, with residence, in the gift of Lord Leigh P.C. and held since 1887 by the Rev. John Edward Reid-Cuddon M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The charities are £45 yearly value. At the time of the Conquest it was possessed by Turchil, Vicecomes of Warwick, and on his dispossession given, as it seems, by Henry I. to Geoffrey de Clinton, whose daughter conveyed it by marriage to the Verduns; the Semelys and others afterwards had some interest in this lordship, but eventually the greater part, being seized by the crown from the monks of Stoneleigh, the then holders, came into the hands of Lord Leigh P.C. by whom the manor is still held and he is the chief landowner. The soil is red loam; subsoil, sandstone and rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, peas and turnips. The area is 1,012 acres; rateable value £1,518; the population in 1891 was 159.

Parochial School (mixed), for 40 children; average attendance 34.
