The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, formerly cruciform, but now consisting of chancel, lofty nave, south porch, and a massive embattled western tower with eight pinnacles containing a clock and 5 bells; one of the buttresses of the tower bears the date 1607; in the church is a monument of Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk K.G. beheaded 23 February, 1555, and Frances (Brandon), his wife, father and mother of the unfortunate Lady Jane Grey, also a brass of a female without inscription circ. 1430; the church was restored in 1876, by Mr. F. C. Penrose, architect to the Dean and chapter of St. Paul’s Cathedral, at a cost of £1,200, the greater portion being contributed by the late Right Hon. C. N. Newdegate P.C., M.P.; there are 208 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1670, and there are several ancient documents relating to the parish still in existence. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £125, including 68 acres of glebe, with residence built in 1884, in the gift of Lieut-General Sir Edward Newdigate-Newdegate K.C.B. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Astley Castle, once the abode of Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk K.G. above mentioned, is now the property of Lieut.-General Sir Edward Newdigate-Newdegate K.C.B.; on the staircase are still preserved the writing table and chair found in an old oak tree, where the Duke of Suffolk was hiding after the failure of the insurrectionary movement originated by Sir Thomas Wyatt, in February, 1554.; the castle was dismantled on the duke’s attainder, but was rebuilt at a later date, and is still surrounded by a moat. There is a church dole of £1 11s. 2d. per annum, bequeathed by Wm. Beck in 1663, and distributed in bread. In 1875 Joseph Bond Eaves gave £5 per annum for keeping in repair family tombstones at Astley, Fillongley, and Coleshill, the residue(if any) to be given to the poor of Astley. Lieut.-Gen. Sir Edward Newdigate-Newdegate K.C.B. of Arbury Priory, who is lord of the manor, Francis Alex. Newdigate esq. M.P. Weston-in-Arden, and J. S. Bourne esq. of Breach Oak are the landowners. The soil is generally red loam and cold wet clay; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and peas.
