The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, formerly cruciform, but now consisting of chancel, lofty nave, south porch, and a massive embattled western tower with eight pinnacles containing a clock and 5 bells; one of the buttresses of the tower bears the date 1607; in the church is a monument of Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk K.G. beheaded 23 February, 1555, and Frances (Brandon), his wife, father and mother of the unfortunate Lady Jane Grey, also a brass of a female without inscription circ. 1430; the church was restored in 1876, by Mr. F. C. Penrose, architect to the Dean and chapter of St. Paul’s Cathedral, at a cost of £1,200, the greater portion being contributed by the late Right Hon. C. N.
