Historical Description

AUSTREY, in Domesday “Aldvlestrey,” is a village and parish on the borders of Leicestershire, 4 miles northeast from Polesworth station, on the Trent Valley section of the London and North-Western railway, 7 north-east from Tamworth, and 7 north from Atherstone, in the Northern division of the county, Tamworth division of the hundred of Hemlingford, Atherstone petty sessional division, union and county court district of Tamworth, rural deanery of Polesworth, archdeaconry of Birmingham and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Nicholas, given in 55 Henry III. (1270-1) to the monks of Burton by Osbert de Clinton, is a building of stone, in the Gothic styles of the 13th and 14th centuries, consisting of lofty chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with a lofty broach spire, containing a clock and 5 bells; in the south aisle is a memorial window to the Rev. Roger Bass, late vicar, placed in 1844: in the following year, besides extensive repairs, the church was renewed at a cost of £2,500, and a new organ furnished at a cost of £200, raised by subscription. Dr. Thomas, in his edition of “Dugdale,” mentions a monument in the church to John, Thomas and Herbert Monk, sons of John Monk esq. of Shenton, Leicestershire (1692-1704), and gives illustrations of many shields of arms of the Beauchamps, Clintons and Staffords, as well as of Wulfric Spot, founder of Burton Abbey, and the families of Hastings and de Valence, at that time in the windows; there are piscinae in the chancel and south aisle, and there is a handsome carved oak tabernacled reredos: there are 340 sittings, from 90 to 100 being unappropriated. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £73, net yearly value £215, including 116 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Bennet Hesketh Williams M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel, and in the village near the vicarage are the remains of a stone cross of the 15th century, raised on five steps. The charities include Monk’s charity, producing an income of £300, and partly devoted to the apprenticeship of boys belonging to the parishes of Austrey, Whitwick, Measham and Shenton, and Lakin’s charity, amounting to £30 yearly, which sum is divided amongst the poor on the festival of St. Thomas. The principal landowners are Mr. Joseph Corbett, the trustees of the late Mr. Edward Kendall, William Grundy esq. and there are several small freeholders. The soil is various, principally a rich loam; subsoil, red marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 2,097 acres; rateable value, £3,284; the population in 1891 was 306.

National School (mixed), built in 1850 & enlarged in 1888, at the cost of £95, by the Rev. W. H. Dyott, for 70 children, average attendance 44.
