Historical Description
BADDESLEY-ENSOR, in Domesday “Bedislei,” is a parish and village, near Watling Street and 3 miles west from Atherstone station on the Midland railway, in the North-Eastern division of the county, Atherstone division of Hemlingford hundred, Atherstone petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Polesworth, archdeaconry of Birmingham and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a tower on the south side of the chancel, with a small spire containing two bells: the reredos was erected in memory of William Stratford Dugdale esq. and the men belonging to this parish who perished in the colliery explosion in May, 1882. The old church was taken down in 1848, and the burial ground, now disused, is half a mile from the present church, which has sittings for 320 persons. The register dates from the year 1688. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £14, net yearly value £140, with residence, in the gift of the inhabitants, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Henry Wilson Lee M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel seating 150 persons, and a Congregational chapel with 250 sittings. W. Francis S. Dugdale esq. J.P. who, with the trustees of the late Joseph Tompson esq. are the lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay and red sandstone; subsoil, sand and stone. The chiof crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,143 acres; rateable value, £2,145; the population in 1891 was 977.
Infants’s School, built about 1850, with class-room added in 1879, for 100 children; average attendance, about 89; Miss Elizabeth Stacey, mistress. The elder children of this parish attend the National school at Bentley. There is a small rent-charge upon Morris & Shaw Limited’ land for the benefit of the school.
