Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BAGINTON, in Domesday, “Badechistone,” and later “Bathkinton,” is a parish on the south bank of the Sowe, 3 miles south from Coventry station on the London and North Western railway and 97 from London, in the North-Eastern division of the county, Kenilworth division of Knightlow hundred, Coventry petty sessional division and county court district, Warwick union, rural deanery of Baginton, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. John the Baptist, originally a chapel attached to the priory of Kenilworth, and standing on a gently rising ground near the entrance of the village, is an edifice of stone in the style of the 13th and early part of the 14th centuries, consisting of chancel, nave, two aisles on the north side and a small octagonal tower with spire, springing from arches between the nave and chancel and containing 2 bells; on the south side is a good plain Early English doorway, and an east window was added by the rector in 1876: there are monuments in the church to Sir William Bagot and Margaret his wife, 1400; and Mrs. E. Campion, 1632; the church affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1628. The living is a retory, average tithe rent-charge £265, gross yearly value £285, including 17 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of William Bromley-Davenport esq. M.P., J.P. of Capesthorne, Chelford, Cheshire, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Rees Grimsdale Gronow M.A. of Christ College, Cambridge. Baginton Hall, which stands on a bold eminence on the road to Coventry, was erected in 1714 by William Bromley esq. Speaker of the House of Commons in 1710, on the site of the old manor house which had been destroyed by fire, the cost of the rebuilding being defrayed from funds voted by the House; over the entrance is the motto: " Dii Patrii Servate Domum, 1714.” The Hall, which commanded a view of Coventry as well as other fine prospects, was destroyed by fire Oct. 7th, 1889, and up to the present time (1895) has not been rebuilt. William Bromley Davenport esq. M.P. is lord of the manor and owner of the entire parish. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are turnips. The area is 1,667 acres; rateable value, £2,473; the population in 1891 was 217.

School, endowed by the late Mrs. Lucy Price, for 60 children; a school-room was built in 1873, at a cost of about £500 for 150 children; average attendance, 21.
