Historical Description
BARCHESTON, in Domesday “Berriceston,” is a parish and village, situated on the river Stour, which here separates this county from Worcestershire, 1 mile south-east from Shipston-on-Stour station, on the Great Western railway, 8 miles north-east from Moreton-in-the-Marsh station on the Worcester and Wolverhampton section of the Great Western railway, in the South-Western division of the county, Brailes division of the Kineton hundred, Brailes petty sessional division, Shipston-on-Stour union and county court district, rural deanery of South Kineton and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Martin, built in the reign of Edward I. A,D. 1281, and consecrated 1291, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing 3 bells; the font is coeval with the church, and there is a monument with alabaster figures, dated 1655, to the Willington family, after whom part of the parish is called: the tower contains two chambers, one over the other, supposed to have been domus inclusae, or abodes of anchorites; black letter copies of Erasmus’s Paraphrase of the New Testament, with their chains, are still preserved here, as well as some pewter communion plate and a silver chalice and paten of the date of Elizabeth: the chancel windows are stained: there are two curious old brasses, one of which represents Hugh Humfray, priest, in academic costume, and there is also a memorial to William Brent ob. 1675: the church was thoroughly restored in 1870, and in 1894 a stained window was placed in the chapel as a memorial to the Allen family: the church affords 180 sittings. The registers date from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge, £225, average £141, net yearly value £170, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1892 by the Rev. Octavius Camillus Wright B.A. of King’s College, Windsor, Nova Scotia. The trustees of the late John Staunton esq. J.P. of Longbridge House, Warwick, and Samuel Gist esq. of Wormington Grange, Didbrook, Cheltenham, who are lords of the manor, and Mrs. Baker, of Reading, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay: subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley oats and beans. The area is 1,518 acres; rateable value, £1,791; the population in 1891 was 161, chiefly located at Willington, half a mile south.
