Historical Description

BARSTON, in Domesday “Bertanestone” and “Bercestone,” one of the extensive possessions of Turchil de Warwick, anciently belonged in part to the Templars, and in part to the Hospitallers, and is a small agricultural village and parish, about 2 ½ miles south from Hampton station on the Midland and London and North Western railways, 4 east from Solihull, and 7 north-west from Kenilworth, in the Northern division of the county, Solihull division of the hundred of Hemlingford, Solihull petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Solihull, archdeaconry of Birmingham and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Swithin, formerly a chapel to Berkswell, and rebuilt in 1721, is a small and plain edifice of red brick, consisting of chancel, nave and a tower containing a clock and 5 bells; the stained east window is a memorial to the late J. Guest esq. The register dates from the year 1598. The living, formerly a chapelry, annexed to Berkswell, was constituted a vicarage in 1894, tithe rent-charge (Barston) £180, including 65 acres of glebe, in the gift of W. Shenstone esq. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Edward Kilvington Graham M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The land is of freehold tenure. The principal landowners are Capt. The Hon. Cecil Saumarez Irby, of Taplow, Berks. William Shenstone and John Smallwood esqrs. and Mr. Joseph Newbery. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, oats, roots and pasturage. The area is 1,878 acres; rateable value, £3,171; the population in 1891 was 345.

Parochial School (mixed), for 50 children, average attendance., 46; Joseph Guest esq. of Dudley, left the interest on £1,500 to clothe the school children.
