Historical Description

BEAUDESERT, called by Dugdale “Beldesert” and in Domesday “Donnelie,” is a parish contiguous to the town of HenIey-in-Arden,5 ½ miles south-west from Kingswood station, on the Oxford and Birmingham section of the Great Western railway, and 8 north-by-west from Stratford-on-Avon, in the South-Western division of the county, petty sessional division of Henley, union and county court district of Stratford-upon-Avon, Henley division of Barlichway hundred, rural deanery of Warwick and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Nicholas stands at the foot of the hill where stood in olden days the castle of Thurstan de Montfort, a small streamlet flowing between it and the chapel of Henley-in-Arden, which is but a few hundred yards distant: though not large, the church of Beaudesert is a venerable and interesting structure of the 12th century, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an embattled tower, at the south-west angle, containing 3 bells, two of which bear mediaeval inscriptions and the third the date 1711: Norman masonry is clearly traceable in the walls of the nave and chancel, but some of the windows are insertions of the 14th century; while the tower must be assigned to a century later: near the south door, within the church, are remains of an ancient stoup: in the chancel is a singular Decorated window, the outline of which, forming a point-headed cinquefoil, presents a feature worthy of note: Norman buttresses flank the east end, which is adorned with a very rich window of the same period, the mouldings displaying zigzag, star and indented ornament: the principal feature of the interior is a highly decorated chancel arch, with double zigzag mouldings, supported on clustered cylindrical shafts with escalloped capitals: fragments of the rood screen still remain: several monuments to former rectors, from 1630 to 1831, formerly in the chancel, are now found at the west end, and in the nave are memorials to the families of Lea, Charles and Welch: the church was thoroughly restored in 1864 at a cost of £1,250: the east window is a memorial to W. W. Lea esq.; and there are others to George Fayrer M.D. and Margaret Lea; all the remaining windows are also stained, and there are 150 sittings. The register dates from March 3rd, 1661. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £129, net yearly value £69, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and held since 1890 by the Rev. Edward Clerevaux Chaytor M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The charities are about £4 yearly value. In this parish, of which his father was rector, was born, October 1st, 1715, Richard Jago M.A. of University College, Oxford, successively incumbent of Harbury, Chesterton and Snitterfield, in this county, and afterwards rector of Kilmcote, Leicestershire, an intimate friend and correspondent of Shenstone and author of the poems of “Edge Hill” and “The Fable of Labour and Genius,” besides “Elegies on Birds,” which have been especially admired; he died at Smitterfield 8th May, 1781, and was there buried. From Beaudesert Mount there is a fine prospect over a beautiful undulating country to Edge Hill, a distance of 20 miles, and also to the Malvern Hills. The trustees of the late Thomas Cattell esq. who are lords of the manor; C. P. Wykeham-Martin esq. of Leeds Castle, near Maidstone; George Frederick Muntz esq. D.L., J.P. of Umberslade, Hockley Heath and Thomas Barnes Couchman esq. of Leamington, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy and marl; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, beans and oats. The area is 1,285 acres; rateable value, £2,108; the population in 1891 was 141.

The children of this place attend the school at Henley-in-Arden.
