Historical Description

BILTON is a parish and pleasant village, on the read from Rugby to Leamington, about 2 ½ miles south-west from Rugby station, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Rugby division of Knightlow hundred, Rugby petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunchurch, archdeaconry of Coventry, and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. Mark is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a western tower with octagonal spire, containing clock and 5 bells: the north aisle was added in 1872, when the building was new-roofed and otherwise restored, including the insertion of a new and enlarged east window, the old one being transferred to the west end of the aisle, a stained window was at the same time presented by Mrs. Pennington, of Rugby, and an organ by the late John Lancaster esq. formerly of Bilton Grange, the oaken case of which, finely carved, was originally in the old chapel of St. John’s College, Cambridge: a stained window, executed by the rector and his brother, Ralph Assheton esq. was placed at the east end of the aisle in 1875, and others on the north and south sides in 1882-5: the rector has since filled the east window with magnificent illustrations of the “Te Deum,” in memory of his parents; and there are others; the communion rails were transferred here from Great St. Mary’s, Cambridge: there are sedilia and a piscina; the restoration of the church was completed during the period 1875-89, at a cost of £2,243: there are 340 sittings. The register dates from the year 1655. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £347, net yearly value £321, including 80 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Richard Orme Assheton M.A. and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Orme Assheton M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. Nunc Dimittis chapel of ease, built in 1894 by the rector in memory of his late wife, is an edifice of red brick and has 100 sittings. The Wesleyan chapel here was rebuilt in 1893 at a cost of £1,087 and has sittings for 250 persons. A reading room and club room, well supplied with newspapers and periodicals, and available for all kinds of public assemblies, subject to the rector’s consent, was erected by him in 1875, and is maintained almost wholly at his expense. Bilton Hall, a spacious irregular edifice in the English Domestic style, was built in 1623, as appears from the date on the upper storey over the porch; it has become famous from having once been inhabited by Addison, who purchased it in 1711 of William Boughton esq. for £10,000, and resided in it during the latter part of his life; the front, exhibiting several picturesque gables, partly covered with ivy, seems to have undergone but little change; the principal approach was formerly through a wide avenue of elms, some of which, in front of the house, still remain; the iron gates bearing the initials J. A. (Joseph Addison) and C. W. (Countess of Warwick) have been removed to the garden. The garden front has been modernised, and one gable rebuilt by the Hon. John Bridgeman Simpson; an arbour at the end of the garden is still pointed out as a favourite retreat of Addison’s; the rooms in the house are adorned with many portraits, including a large painting of Charles I. and an equerry, by Vandyck and Stone, a portrait of Addison and of his daughter by Sir Godfrey Knelier, and others of the Princes Rupert and Maurice by Vandyck: it is now the property of Granville Henry Orlando Bridgeman esq. of Nightingale Lodge, Wandsworth Common, London S. W. subject to the life interest of the Misses Bridgeman Simpson, who are the occupiers. Bilton Manor House, the residence of Richard Henry Shuckburgh esq. J.P. contains many valuable paintings, including specimens of the old masters, one of which, a Madonna and Child, by Pietro Vanucci Perugino (1446-1524), is particularly meritorious; more interesting perhaps is the collection of portraits of members of the ancient family of Shuckburgh. Bilton Grange, a large and elegant mansion in the Gothic style, now used as a private preparatory school for boys, is about 1 ½ miles south of the church: it was rebuilt In 1846, and is the property of the Rev. Walter Earle M.A. headmaster: adjoining is a chapel erected in 1889. G. H. O. Bridgeman esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light black clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,192 acres; rateable value, £9,403; the population of the civil parish in 1891 was 1,894, including the populous parish of New Bilton, which is given under Rugby, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 803.

Church of England School (mixed), erected 1841 by the Rev. J. Parker, a former rector & enlarged in 1890 for 140 children; average attendance, 90.
