Historical Description

BINTON, in Domesday “Benintone” and “Benitone,” is a village and small parish near the navigable Avon, 1 mile north-west from Binton station on the East and West Junction railway, about 4 west-by-south from Stratford-upon-Avon, 5 south-east from Alcester and 97 from London, in the South-Western division of the county, Stratford division of Barlichway hundred, petty sessional division of Stratford and Snitterfield, union and county court district of Stratford-on-Avon, rural deanery of Alcester, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. This was one of the towns given by St. Edwyn, on its foundation, to the abbey of Evesham. At a short distance from the village is a bridge of seven arches over the Avon, connecting Gloucestershire with this county. The church of St. Peter, standing on an eminence, was rebuilt in 1875-6, at a cost of £3,500, chiefly at the expense of the Marquess of Hertford, and is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts and a western tower containing 1 bell and a clock, erected in 1877 by public subscription; in the north transept is a memorial to the Rev. John Carlton, a former rector, d. 1819: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1580; marriages, 1539; burials, 1540, and are remarkably legible. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £126; net yearly value, £106, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Hertford, and held since 1887 by the Rev. John Holmes Dixon M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The Marquess of Hertford is lord of the manor, and owner of nearly all the land. Here is a Congregational chapel. The soil is clay on rock, and there are numerous quarries of limestone which has been used for paving, and the refuse converted into lime of good quality, but they are now closed. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, mangold-wurtzel and turnips. The area is 1,300 acres; rateable value, £1,188; the population in 1891 was 235.

Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1873, for 45 children; average attendance, 42.
