Historical Description
BRAILES is a village and extensive parish, on the road from Banbury to Shipston-on-Stour, 4 miles east from Shipston-on-Stour station on the Shipston branch of the Great Western railway, 9 miles north-east from Moreton-in-the-Marsh station and 10 west from Banbury station, both on the same line, in the South-Western division of the county, head of a petty sessional division, Brailes division of Kineton hundred, Shipston-on-Stour. union and county court district, rural deanery of South Kineton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. George, given to the canons of Kenilworth, in King Henry I.'s time by Roger, Earl of Warwick, is one of the finest in the county, and was known in bygone times as the “Cathedral of the Feldon,” the two divisions of Warwickshire separated by the Avon being distinguished by early writers as the “Feldon,” or country cleared of timber, and the “Woodland,” or forest, also called “Arden:" it consists of a spacious chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles, south porch, and a majestic western tower, 25 feet square and 120 feet in height, with embattled parapet and pinnacles and containing a clock and 6 bells, and on the north side of the chancel is a vestry, built at a much later period, probably in 1649: the internal dimensions of the church are 165 feet from east to west, and 52 feet from north to south: of the original Norman structure scarcely any traces remain: here and there a stone with the familiar zig-zag moulding may be detected built into the existing fabric, and the piers of the south aisle, from excavations made it 1879, are known to rest on portions of the old Norman foundations, but beyond this nothing of the early church can be recognised: the windows of the south aisle are triplets, probably of the 13th century, and above them is a very elaborately-carved cornice and pierced parapet of 14th century work, divided into six portions by crocketed pinnacles, rising behind which is seen the clerestory of the nave, a long range of twelve windows, placed at irregular heights, each consisting of two cinque-foil lights within a square head, beneath a cornice moulding and a plain parapet, broken only by a single large crocketed pinnacle in the centre: in the repairs and alterations of 1649 the whole north arcade, with its clerestory, was taken down and rebuilt in the debased style of that period, every ornamental feature being displaced and buried in the wall with its plain surface outward; it was part of the work of restoration carried out in 1879 to recover the lost tracery, and to bring back this clerestory to its original form, the heavy square pillars being also worked into an octagonal shape, and the capitals and arches made to correspond with those on the south side: the chancel dates from the 14th century, and has a fine east window of five lights, with reticulated tracery in the head, now filled with stained glass, in memory of Henry Attwood, 1876; Isabella Attwood, 1878; William Baker, churchwarden, 1820-62; Elizabeth Baker, 1868; Robert Wincott, 1835; and Hannah Wincott, 1876; two other windows of the same date light a portion of the south side, the remaining space being occupied by a large Perpendicular window of four lights; the tower is of 15th century work, in three stages, the uppermost, or belfry, being well lighted by windows of elegant proportions, in pairs: in its western face is a large five-light Perpendicular window, and beneath it the principal entrance, opening into the church by a fine arch 30 feet in height, immediately opposite which, in the centre of the church, has been placed the old font, an octagonal basin of Decorated work, with rich tracery on each of its sides, on a shaft and base of the same date: the nave roof has been removed, thoroughly repaired and replaced, and covered with lead: in the chancel the old 14th century roof still exists, and has received new boarded panelling, with the old mouldings and carvings refixed, but the aisle roofs are, with the exception of one principal, modern and inferior work, the original timbers having been removed about 50 years since: all the old pews, with one exception, have been removed, and the church is now fitted uniformly with open benches; a carved oak pulpit on a stone base has been placed against the north pier of the chancel arch, in front of which stands a brass lectern: the sacrarium has been relaid with Minton’s tiles, the patterns being in several instances reproduced from fragments found in the church; the reredos of Campden stone, with marble columns and cross, was contributed by the Rev. E. Thoyts M.A. canon of Inverness, and formerly vicar of Honington, near here; the great west window is a memorial to the late Mrs. Wincott, erected by her husband: there is another stained window in the south aisle to the memory of 37 children who were carried off by an epidemic in the years 1876-7, and two in the clerestory: two of the bells, a grand mediaeval tenor, probably more than 500 years old, and the third bell had for many years been badly cracked, but by the munificence of the Rev. Canon Thoyts these have been successfully recast, the rich ornamentation and Latin legend on the great tenor, weighing 35 cwt. being perfectly reproduced; of the remaining bells the oldest is the second, bearing a Latin invocation to Christ and the Virgin; the others are dated respectively 1624, 1668, 1671; the sanctus bell has been rehung in an elegant bell-cot of stone, with a small crocketed spirelet, rising from the eastern gable of the nave, the cost of which, about £60, was defrayed entirely from the sale of elegant trifles produced by Miss A. E. Smith; on the floor of the chancel are a number of inscribed stones to the family of Bishop, for some time patrons of this Iiving (1588-1712), and at the west end of the south aisle is an altar tomb covered by a black marble slab to Mr. Richard Davies gent. M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, with a fulsome inscription (1639): there are also memorials to Richard Godson, died 1805; Ann, his first wife, died 1788; Ann, his second wife, died 1805; and to the families of Jones, Allcock, and Spencer: Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, founded a guild in this church from part of the revenues of which, in the 37 Henry VIII. a grammar school was established and endowed, which is still flourishing; this payment from the lay rector, now amounting annually to £8 1s. 8d. forming a portion of its present income; the total cost of the restoration, including £275 for a new organ, was £5,693, which was contributed by 18,556 persons; in the year 1887 a tablet was erected at the western entrance, bearing an inscribed record of the restoration of the church and its re-opening by the Bishop of Worcester, June 20, 1879; the work was carried out under the direction of Mr. William Bassettr-Smith, architect, of London; in 1892 the vestry was enlarged and the organ placed in an organ chamber on the north side, at the cost of Mr. Richard Badger, of Leamington, and a brass tablet erected to Thomas and Harriett Wincott: there are 750 sittings. The register dates from 1570. The living, with Winderton, is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £58, average £44, net yearly value, £300, including 127 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev, Thomas Smith B.A. of Cockington, Devon, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Frederick Ernest Garrard M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. William Richardson M.A. student of Christ Church, Oxford, instituted to the vicarage by that University in 1651, held it through a period of 44 years, including the reigns of four sovereigns and the Commonwealth (1651-95), and was the author of a “Protestant Catechism,” a copy of which is preserved in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Immediately contiguous to the eastern boundary of the churchyard is the Catholic chapel, dedicated to SS. Peter and Paul, dating from 1726 and enlarged in 1834, with a priest’s residence attached and a school; there is also a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1886, and a place of worship for Primitive Methodists, erected in 1863: the Brailes Institute was built by subscription in 1886. A weekly market was formerly held here on Mondays, and a fair on the eve of St. George and two following days, both dating from Henry III.’s reign. The most distinguished native of this place on record appears to be William Bishop D.D. titular Bishop of Chalcedon, and a member of the family above mentioned, being the first Catholic bishop sent into England after the Reformation; he was born at Brailes in 1550, consecrated in 1623 at Paris, and died near London in 1624, aged 71. The family of Sheldon, of Beoley, Worcestershire, have held this manor from the time of Edward VI. Brailes House is the residence of Henry James Sheldon esq. J.P. Henry James Sheldon esq. J.P. lord of the manor, the Rev. Canon E. Thoyts M.A. rector of Ashe, Hants, the Rev. T.
