Historical Description

The village of Brinklow, which flourished in great wealth and splendour till the reformation. The church is demolished; but the abbey called Comb-Abbey, the seat of the Earl of Craven, with some modern improvements, is a handsome mansion. Here are the remains of an ancient castle.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BRINKLOW is a large village and parish on the Oxford canal, with a station ¾ mile north of the village on the Trent Valley (London and North-Western) railway, about 7 miles east from Coventry, 6 ½ north-west from Rugby and 88 by rail from London, in the South-Eastern division of the county, in Kirby division of Knightlow hundred, Rugby petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Rugby, archdeaconry of Coventry, and diocese of Worcester. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, vestry, north porch, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells; all the chancel windows are stained, and a stained window, the gift of the late Edward Wood esq. of Newbold Revel, was placed at the west end in 1871; the church was restored in 1862, at a cost of £1,600: the ancient rood stairs, then discovered, remain open, and are in very perfect condition: from west to east there is a rise of 12 feet in the floor level: the church affords 416 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1558; marriages, 1574. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £6: gross yearly value £144, including 127 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Richard Pilkington Watson M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel. A cemetery, half an acre in extent, was formed in 1884, and is controlled by the Parish Council of 6 members. A castle possessed by the De Mowbray family is supposed to have anciently stood here, but nothing now remains to indicate the site. A little to the east of the village, and adjoining the churchyard, on the Roman Fossway, which passes through the village near to the church, a Roman encampment may be traced, and near it is an early British camp and tumulus, which the Romans utilized for defensive purposes, and from the top of which a good view may be obtained of the country around. Major Francis Hood Gregory J.P. of Styvechale Hall, is lord of the manor. The Earl of Craven, Harry Brierly esq. of Church Lawford, Arthur Herbert Edward Wood esq. and Major F. H. Gregory, of Styvechale, are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey loam; subsoil, blue clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, potatoes and oats. The area is 1,359 acres; rateable value, £2,644; the population in 1891 was 714.

National School (mixed), erected, with master’s house, in 1855, & enlarged in 1895 for 145 boys & girls & 70 infants; average attendance, 125 boys & girls & 60 infants.
