Historical Description

CLAVERDON, in Domesday “Claverdone,” is a village and large and extensive parish with a station on the Leamington and Stratford-on-Avon section of the Great Western railway, about 4 miles east from Henley-in-Arden, 6 west from Warwick, 113 from London, in the South-Western division of the county, Henley division of the hundred of Barlichway, Henley petty sessional division, Warwick county court district, Stratford-on-Avon union, rural deanery of Warwick and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The Birmingham and Stratford canal runs near the parish. The foundation of a church here dates from a very remote period, as is clear from the mention of a priest in the Domesday Survey; at a later period, by the gift of the Conqueror, it became part of the extensive possessions of the Earls of Warwick, and has at various times undergone much alteration. The church of St. Michael is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower of two stages, in the Gothic style of the 15th century, containing a clock and 6 bells cast by Lester and Pack of London, in 1757; the nave and south aisle are modern, having been rebuilt in 1830, at a cost, including other work, of £1,200, obtained from a charity founded by John Matthews, nth May, 1525; the nave was again completely restored in 1877-8 at an expense of £2,530, the chancel being at the same time thoroughly repaired, by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and the church fitted with new and massive benches of oak; the pulpit, of Caen stone, was given by the vicar; the fine oak communion table and sedilia by Miss Phillips, of Claverdon, and the brass eagle lectern by the late R. N. Philips esq. M.P.; there are memorials in the nave to the families of Wilcox and Deakins, and in the chancel, against the north wall, is the incomplete monument of Thomas Spencer, of Claverdon, second son of Sir John Spencer kt. of Wormleighton, Warwickshire, and Althorp, in Northamptonshire, who died in 1586; this consists of a high tomb, formerly supporting a sarcophagus, beneath an alcove, surmounted by an entablature on two Ionic columns, terminating in an escutcheon of seven quarterings, with helm, crest and mantling; a mural tablet records the name of Robert Wylde M.A. a former vicar, who died 1833; there are sittings for 240 persons. The register dates from the year 1629, but the years from 1700-5 are missing, and one volume is in a mutilated state. The living is a vicarage, with that of Norton Lindsey annexed, average tithe-rent change £171; joint net yearly value £210, including 62 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Worcester and held since 1894 by the Rev. Clement Price M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The great tithes belong to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Here is a small Baptist chapel on Yarningale Common, built in 1881 and seating 40 persons. John Matthews gave by deed of feoffment, May nth, in the 17th year of Henry VIII. several tenements and parcels of land for the sole use of the church; in 1617 the rent was 12 nobles; in 1707, £12, in 1825, £78; in 1845, £100 17s. 6d.; at the present time about £85. The principal landowners are Darwin Galton esq. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor, Lady Trevelyan, of Wallington, Northumiberland, and Welcombe, Stratford-on-Avon and Miss Phillips, of Ardencote. The soil is heavy and clayey; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are beans and wheat. The area of Claverdon is 2,754 acres; rateable value £3,710; the population in 1891 was, of Claverdon civil parish 550, and of the ecclesiastical parish 819.

A School Board of the united districts of Claverdon & Langley, of 5 members, was formed November 24, 1873; John Douglas, clerik to the board & attendance officer.

Board School (mixed & infants), built in 1886 for 210 children; average attendance, 83 boys & girls, & 39 infants.
