Historical Description
COMPTON WINYATES, in Domesday “Contone,” is a small parish, on the borders of Oxfordshire, 5 ½ miles east from Shipston-on-Stour station, on the branch of the Great Western railway to Moreton-in-the-Marsh, 9 from Banbury station on the Great Western and London and North Western railways, and 6 from Kineton station on the East and West Junction railway, in the South-Western division of the county, Brailes division of Kineton hundred, Brailes petty sessional division, Shipston-on-Stour union and county court district, rural deanery of South Kineton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The church (dedication unknown), is a building of stone, partially rebuilt, according to a stone embedded in the tower, in 1662, and exhibiting a singular admixture of styles: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and an embattled western tower containing 1 bell: in the church is a mural monument of marble to Major-Gen. the Hon. Sir William Compton P.C. governor of Banbury Castle in 1645, and master-general of the ordnance in 1660, who died 18 Oct. 1663; there remain several broken figures from the destroyed tomb of Sir William Compton kt. who greatly distinguished himself at the Battle of Spurs, or Guinegaste, in Aug. 1513, was with Henry VIII. at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, 4 June, 1520, and died 31 May, 1528; and there are other fragments of the tomb of his grandson, Sir Hy. Compton kt. first Baron Compton, who died in 1589; the ceiling is painted to symbolise Day and Night: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1683. The living is a rectory, annexed to the vicarage of Tysoe, average tithe rent-charge (Compton) £156, joint net yearly value £230, including 130 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Marquess of Northampton, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Francis Vivian Dodgson M.A. of New College, Oxford, who resides at Middle Tysoe.
Compton Winyates House, romantically seated in a valley or hollow, was built in the reign of Henry VIII. by Sir William Compton, and, according to Leland, some of the material was brought from Fulbrooke Castle; it is an extensive edifice, well preserved, and is built round a large court or quadrangle, measuring 61 by 58 feet, with the hall opposite to the entrance; this is a fine apartment, rising to the full height of the house, with an open timbered roof, a great bay window and a screen; an immense slab, cut from a single oak, and now resting on modern trestles, formed the dining table; adjoining the hall was the parlour, from which is reached the chapel, which has small aisles and a chancel screen; a stately suite of rooms occupies the east side, the drawing room having a plaster ceiling of the time of Queen Elizabeth, restored in 1867; the walls and chimney piece are decorated with carvings removed from Canonbury Tower, Islington, London; ceilings of good design are found in some of the other rooms, which number about 80 in all, and the principal room, with those occupied by the custodian, are furnished.
Compton Winyates is the seat of the Marquess of Northampton K.G., J.P. who is lord of the manor and sole landowner, and occasionally resides here; this park and manor have been the property of the Compton family from the time of Edward I. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 997 acres; rateable value, £1,226; the population in 1891 was 22.
The children of this parish attend the school at Tysoe.
