Historical Description

CORLEY, in Domesday “Cornelie,” is a parish on the road from Coventry to Tamworth, about 4 ½ miles northwest from Coventry station on the London and North Western railway, and 98 ½ from London, in the North-Eastern division of the county, Atherstone division of Hemlingford hundred, Coventry petty sessional division and county court district, Meriden union, rural deanery of Atherstone, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. Previous to the Great Survey of 1086, Godwin possessed it, then it passed to the family of Hastings, and afterwards to the Mancetters. Subsequently, it was held by the family of Champernoun, and then, by the marriage of Blanche, daughter and co-heiress of John de Champernoun, with Sir Robert Willoughby, it passed to that of Willoughby de Broke. The church (name not known), formerly belonging to the priory of Coventry, is an ancient biding of stone, consisting of chancel in the Early Decorated style, north aisle of the Late Decorated period, nave, and a wooden belfry containing 5 bells, the oldest of which bears the inscription “Gloria tibi Domine” and is said to date from about 1350; another, dated 1641, is inscribed “God save the King”: the stained east window was erected in 1882, by the late Joseph Moggs esq. as a memorial to Josiah, Mary and Susannah, members of his family: in the nave are the remains of two Saxon windows, c. 900, and two Norman arches, c. 1100; the church has been restored since 1893 at a cost of £727, and affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1540. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £295; gross yearly value £330; net £281, including 18 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Major Francis Hood Gregory J.P. of Styvechale Hall, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Robert Potter M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. Near the church are the remains of a Roman encampment, of which the ditch and rampart can still be distinctly traced. Joseph Cooper esq. of Berwood, Erdington, is lord of the manor and Joseph Cash esq. of Birdgrove, Foleshill road, Coventry, are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, sandstone and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. It contains 1,345 acres; rateable value, £2,317 1s. 9d.; the population in 1891 was 274.
