Historical Description

DUNCHURCH, in Domesday “Donecerce,” is a small town and parish on the high Holyhead road, with a station about 2 miles west on the Leamington and Rugby branch of the London and North-Western railway, 4 miles south from Rugby and 80 from London, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Rugby division of Knightlow hundred, Rugby petty sessional division, union, and county court district, rural deanery of Dunchurch, archdeaconry of Coventry and diocese of Worcester. The village is lighted with gas, supplied from the works of the Rev. Walter Earle M.A. of Bilton grange. The church of St. Peter is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch (now converted into a vestry) with a Norman doorway, and a fine embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells, with a doorway of curious workmanship: in the church is a monument, with folding doors of marble, to the memory of Thomas Newcombe esq. king’s printer, during the reigns of three sovereigns: the east and west windows are stained, and the churchyard was enlarged in 1873 by three-quarters of an acre, the land being given by the Duke of Buccleuch K.T.: there are 600 sittings, 252 being free. The register dates from the year 1538, but the period 1655-8 is imperfect. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £178, gross yearly value £260, including 43 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester and held since 1894 by the Rev. William Rigby Jubb M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. There is a place of worship for Baptists, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1876. Near the church is an almshouse, erected in 1695 by Thomas Newcombe, king’s printer, and rebuilt in 1818 at the joint expense of Charles, 4th Duke of Buccleuch K.T. and the inhabitants. Nearly opposite the Dun Cow hotel is a statue in Portland stone of the late Lord John Scott, by J. Durham A.R.A. erected by public subscription. At the old Dun Cow hotel a Court Leet and Court Baron are held annually in connection with the lordship of the hundred of Knightlow, which is in the hands of the Duke of Buccleuch K.T.: the right to hold this court was granted to Sir Francis Leigh K.B. of Newnham Regis, in 1602, and has been continuously exercised ever since: a court, the institution of which dated from the reign of Richard I. was formerly held at Newnham Regis in connection with this estate, but it has been merged in the one mentioned above. A right also exists of holding a court every three weeks for the recovery of debts under 40s., and this right, though not now exercised, has never been abrogated, though it has virtually been superseded by the county courts. There are remains of an old market cross, the shaft of which is supposed to have been demolished about the time of the Reformation, but the five steps still exist, and now support a kind of obelisk, erected in 1813 by Harriet, late Duchess of Buccleuch. Dunchurch is noted as having been a meeting-place of the conspirators in connection with the Gunpowder Plot, and the old Lion inn, where they assembled, now a private house, is still in existence and in a fine state of preservation. The Horse Fair is held in November, on the 15th, 16th and 17th. The Duke of Buccleuch K.T. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The trustees of the late Luke Borman esq. are owners of land at Toft. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 4,846 acres; rateable value, £5,678; rateable value of Thurlaston, £2,188. The population, including the hamlets of Cawston and Toft and the township of Thurlaston, in 1891 was 1,276.

Schools

Endowed Free National School, founded & endowed in 1707 by Francis Boughton esq. for children belonging to the parish; average attendance, 90 boys & 64 girls’ & infants.

National, Thurlaston (mixed), erected in 1849, average attendance, 40. The schoolroom is also used as a chapel of ease to Dunchurch.
