Historical Description
ETTINGTON (or Eatington), in Domesday “Etedone” and “Etendone,” is a parish and village in the South-Western division of the county, petty sessional division of Stratford and Snitterfield, union and county court district of Stratford-on-Avon, Kineton division of Kineton hundred, rural deanery of North Kineton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Worcester. The parish is sub-divided into Lower and Upper Ettington, Fulready, Thornton and Lambcote. Upper Ettington has a station (called Ettington) on the East and West Junction railway, connecting the Northampton and Banbury junction railway with the Great Western and Midland lines, and is 5 miles north from Shipston-on-Stour, 5 south-west from Kineton, and 6 south-east from Stratford-on-Avon. The parish touches on the eastern bank of the river Stour, which separates the counties of Warwick and Worcester. The name of this place was written “Eatington,” from the middle of the 17th century until 1874, when the original spelling of “Ettington was resumed. The church of St. Thomas a Becket, formerly belonging to the priory of Kenilworth, is a plain building of stone consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, south aisle and a low tower containing 4 bells, and was erected partly at the expense of the late Evelyn John Shirley esq. grandfather of the late Evelyn Philip Shirley esq. an Act of Parliament having been passed in 1798 for the enclosure of the open fields and for removing the parish church of Ettington: it was shortly after re-erected on its present site, in Upper Ettington, 2 miles east from Lower Ettington, where the principal part of the population resided: there are 254 sittings, 144 being free. Of the ancient, cruciform church the tower and south transept alone remain: these portions were repaired by the late Evelyn John Shirley esq. who in the year 1825 restored and converted the transept into a domestic chapel, the windows being at that time filled with the ancient painted glass, the greater part of which is believed to have originally formed part of the great “Jesse” window, formerly in the chapel of William of Wykeham’s college at Winchester; the transept, the burial place of the Shirley family, contains a curious altar-tomb of Kenilworth stone, with effigies of Sir Ralph de Shirley (ob. 1327) and Margaret (Waldeshief), his wife; Sir Ralph was the first knight of the shire for this county, which he was elected to represent in 1312, and was also eminent as a military commander: there is also a fine monument to Robert, first Earl Ferrers, who died 25th December, 1717, erected by his son, the Hon. George Shirley, in the year 1776: the centre figure in this monument represents the Hon. George Shirley who died 22nd October, 1787, and on either side are those of his father and mother, the Earl and Countess Ferrers, in thier robes. The register dates from the year 1661. The living is a discharged vicarage, tithe modus £13, net yearly value £110, including 120 acres of glebe, with residence, erected by the late E. J. Shirley esq. in the gift of Sewallis Evelyn Shirley esq. (whose ancestor, Saswale, or Sewallus de Etendone, built and endowed the church about the time of the Norman Conquest), and held since 1866 by the Rev. George Hesketh Biggs M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. At the village of Upper Ettington is a Friends’ meeting house, founded soon after the reign of Charles II. Fox (the founder of the Society of Friends) preached at Lambcote in this parish. There is also a Congregational chapel and a Wesleyan chapel built in 1836, and restored in 1876. There is a Provident Medical Institution, founded in 1850, with 30 members, and clubs for the amelioration of the condition of the agricultural labourers, who are also benefited by the land allotments which have been made here for many years. Ettington Park and Manor were remarkable even in Dugdale’s time for the long period they had remained in one family; they then belonged to Sir Robert Shirley bart. whose younger son, Sir Robert Shirley knt. and bart. was advanced by Charles II. on the termination of its abeyance in his favour, to the barony of Ferrers of Chartley, and was afterwards created by Queen Anne, in 1711, Viscount Tamworth and Earl Ferrers; this nobleman alienated Ettington, the original seat of his family, from the descendants of his first wife, Elizabeth (Washington), who are represented by the present Earl Ferrers, of Staunton Harold, in Leicestershire, and Chartley, in Staffordshire, and left it by will, together with his Irish property, to the Hon. George Shirley, his eldest son by his second wife, Selina (Finch), from whom the present holder, Sewallis Evelyn Shirley esq. D.L., J.P. is directly descended. At the eastern boundary of the deer park, celebrated for its large and aged hawthorns, stands a house, part of which is supposed to be of great antiquity; it has been enlarged and cased with stone in the Early English style, from designs by John Pritchard esq. architect, of Llandaff, and four different colored kinds of stone, all obtained from the neighbourhood, have been used in reconstruction: some of the most remarkable events in the history of the Shirley family are commemorated in sculpture, from designs by J. Armstead esq. the material used being the white lias found in the Armscot field, in the parish of Tredington, Worcestershire. Lower Ettington House was almest wholly rebuilt by the late E.P. Shirley esq. in 1858-62; some doorways of the mansion of 1641 still remain, but there had been a still earlier structure of great antiquity; the interior contains many valuable pictures, and an extensive and valuable library, which was greatly augmented by the late owner, E. P. Shirley esq.: in the garden stands a stone summer house or pavilion, brought from Coleshill Park, and described under that head. Sewallis Evelyn Shirley esq. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor, Major Sir Charles Mordaunt bart. D.L., J.P. of Walton Hall, Mrs. Lowe and William Bevington Gibbins esq. are principal landowners. The soil is generally a stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat and beans. The whole parish contains 3,463 acres; rateable value, £4,099; the population in 1891 was 620.
National School, erected in 1813, by the late Evelyn John Shirley esq. & enlarged in 1871 by the late Evelyn Philip Shirley esq.; a tower, added to the building by W. B. Gibbins esq. contains a clock, given by Mrs. Gibbins; the school will hold about 150 children; average attendance, 130.
